out. What are they trying to accomplish?
This is my computer, the public's internet, what right do they have to mess up a whole screen of a page I would like to read? Why do various site's allow it?

(63,203 posts)I have willinging clicked on a web ad exactly zero times.
It strikes me as the most preposterously ineffective ad format in the universe.
Egnever
(21,506 posts)run out and bought something you saw advertised on tv?
Just trying to figure outnif it is any more effective on you.

(63,203 posts)As far as physical products go, I'd say it's about zero. At least, I've never been convinced by an ad to buy something that I wouldn't otherwise have bought.
I've probably seen a few movies based on their trailers, though, so that's worth considering. Of course, judging by the volume of ads that I've seen (like anyone else), the hit:miss ratio is pretty lousy.

(21,506 posts)In my opinion ads mostly only work if you are in the market for the product in the first place. No matter where they are placed.

(47,953 posts)I generally disable javascript when dealing with those sites. Gets rid of the problem.

tblue37
(65,334 posts)you accidentally end up clicking on the ad instead, and then the ad won't allow you to leave the page.

(42,753 posts)when I go to a site and almost immediately I hear audio from some sales pitch. I used to look around on the page to see what small panel it was coming from so that I could stop it but now I just leave right away and make a mental note to never return to that site again. I consider something like that intrusive. If I was interested in what their message was I would click on it rather than have it forced on me whether I want it or not.
tblue37
(65,334 posts)Now I just keep my audio off. I am severely hearing impaired, so I don't listen to stuff online anyway. But even for me, the audio on those ads is so loud that it causes me to startle and jump.

(1,712 posts)If you don't already have Chrome on your computer, download it free and start downloading blockers. It's a beautiful thing.

(25,586 posts)There's a great Greek/Lebanese place near here whose menu I wanted to look at online, but as soon as I hit their page BOOM -- loud, irritating Greek music and no obvious way to turn it off. Assholes.

(5,168 posts)Right now, Thom Hartmann. I resent any site that allows audio to play without me clicking it. I usually just close any site that does that as soon as realize it's covering up what I'm trying to hear.
It's getting to where you have to click to get rid of a popup on every page you open. I've got popups blocked, but it doesn't stop them.

(67,395 posts)which is not really javascript heavy. u can also set temporary permissions which will clear when u leave a site. when u visit a javascript site you are offered the option to allow or not allow certain levels of script activitity

Oh, and it's free.
I love free.

(21,506 posts)Some owners are perfectly happy to have ads like that. I would take that into consideration when you decide what sites you want to frequent.

(94,503 posts)If you didn't create it and you're not paying it use it, what right do you have to complain?
Daemonaquila
(1,712 posts)I have no problem with people complaining, especially when they give double barrels to the advertisers and install blocking software to avoid letting those SOBs put ad crap in front of them.

(38,310 posts)Sometimes I have to go back and unblock something, but not often.
Sites I enjoy tend to have unobtrusive advertising for things I care about, usually technical stuff.
I don't have Adobe Flash installed so that gets rid of the most annoying stuff.
I've been on the internet a long time. I used Lynx, a text-only browser, for many years.
Maybe it's just a quirk of mine, but I don't like things moving around or making sounds on a web page without my permission.

(21,946 posts)unlimited bandwidth. I have 0 ads on my site. That's 0.
I don't know what's costing so much that everyone has to put as many ads as they can squeeze into a screen except greed for the money for selling the space. If companies want to put ads all over everything, why don't they put up their own site and plaster their ads on their own wall and leave the rest of us alone.

(21,786 posts)Then get the Adblock Plus and NoScript addons (also recommended: Flash blocker plugin so only Flash content you allow is played). Then? No more ads.
alarimer
(16,245 posts)I use AdBlock Plus on my computers, so I basically never see an ad and I have most pop-ups blocked as well.
I just haven't figured out what to do on my tablet. Salon is HORRIBLE on tablets; there are pop-ups I can never get rid of.
Daemonaquila
(1,712 posts)On a tablet or mobile device, get Mercury. That browser COMES WITH AD BLOCKER already installed - you just have to turn it on. Also, it lets you spoof a variety of browsers so that if, like me, you hate mobile sites, you'll never see another one again.
Daemonaquila
(1,712 posts)Make sure you have a compatible browser you're using, download it, and never deal with another ad again.
