I have a gripe. The ads/or whatever that make the whole screen greyed

out. What are they trying to accomplish?
This is my computer, the public's internet, what right do they have to mess up a whole screen of a page I would like to read? Why do various site's allow it?

I have willinging clicked on a web ad exactly zero times.

It strikes me as the most preposterously ineffective ad format in the universe.

As far as physical products go, I'd say it's about zero. At least, I've never been convinced by an ad to buy something that I wouldn't otherwise have bought.

I've probably seen a few movies based on their trailers, though, so that's worth considering. Of course, judging by the volume of ads that I've seen (like anyone else), the hit:miss ratio is pretty lousy.

In my opinion ads mostly only work if you are in the market for the product in the first place. No matter where they are placed.

when I go to a site and almost immediately I hear audio from some sales pitch. I used to look around on the page to see what small panel it was coming from so that I could stop it but now I just leave right away and make a mental note to never return to that site again. I consider something like that intrusive. If I was interested in what their message was I would click on it rather than have it forced on me whether I want it or not.

Right now, Thom Hartmann. I resent any site that allows audio to play without me clicking it. I usually just close any site that does that as soon as realize it's covering up what I'm trying to hear.

It's getting to where you have to click to get rid of a popup on every page you open. I've got popups blocked, but it doesn't stop them.

Sometimes I have to go back and unblock something, but not often.

Sites I enjoy tend to have unobtrusive advertising for things I care about, usually technical stuff.

I don't have Adobe Flash installed so that gets rid of the most annoying stuff.

I've been on the internet a long time. I used Lynx, a text-only browser, for many years.

Maybe it's just a quirk of mine, but I don't like things moving around or making sounds on a web page without my permission.

unlimited bandwidth. I have 0 ads on my site. That's 0.
I don't know what's costing so much that everyone has to put as many ads as they can squeeze into a screen except greed for the money for selling the space. If companies want to put ads all over everything, why don't they put up their own site and plaster their ads on their own wall and leave the rest of us alone.

On a tablet or mobile device, get Mercury. That browser COMES WITH AD BLOCKER already installed - you just have to turn it on. Also, it lets you spoof a variety of browsers so that if, like me, you hate mobile sites, you'll never see another one again.
