He was released by the efforts of a Democratic president who they hate; his parents are Obama supporters and seem a little too "hippyish" for the Right's taste. They and the young man had the temerity to criticize American foreign policy.
Sgt. Bergdhal does not fit the stereotype of what conservatives expect from all soldiers and Marines: conservative, crew cutted, Christan fundamentalist, uber-Alpha macho male, and fully supportive neo-con militarism. And his family must share those values and look like a 1950's sitcom family.
If a soldier, Marine or veteran fails to meet that archetype, conservatives will give him no respect.

You can't support our troops and do the insane things the republican party does. This is only going to prove just how stupid these jerks really are.

They dropped him like a hot potatoe when that all came out.

(23,720 posts)This other young man was raised with a strong set of ethics and was told by his father to follow his conscience.
The profile of him that I read in Rolling Stone had me thinking that he is a sensitive dreamer type person whose disillusionment with the military may have cause him to go over the edge mentally.
But there was a contradiction in the article that bothered me too. Apparently the Taliban thought this guy was an important person. This statement led me to wonder if he wasn't just an enlisted guy who snapped and walked away?
Anyway, it's not for me to judge.
