Related: Editorials & Other Articles, Issue Forums, Alliance Forums, Region ForumsSince we are pulling out of Afghanistan by the end of the year and the war is
actively winding down, it seems to me that Bowe Bergdahl's release would have absolutely been desirable. Can you imagine the hay to be made should he have been left? I don't care how he ended up where he was, bringing him home was the right thing to do on many levels, as was releasing these men who had not been charged with crimes.
When wars end, POWs are returned. No matter how clever by half the Bush administration thought it was being with words and legal slicing and dicing, they executed a war and took prisoners. They kept these prisoners offshore to sidestep the legal issues. This exchange needed to occur. Period. The war needs to end. Period. The rest of those men in Gitmo need to be released or tried. Period. "Worst of the worst?" What is the likelihood that withdrawing from these wars will significantly de-escalatete tensions to the point that the threat becomes non-existent?
