And solely to enforce a cool down period when people get rowdy about a topic. I inevitably lift it within about a few days.

I do not ignore people I disagree with, only those who act like jerks about disagreements.

that I keep on the list to remind myself that I'm a pretty decent judge of character I have between 12 and 16, depending on my mood.

It keeps me sane because no matter how much I like to interact with even those I don't always agree with there are a few that I really don't like and don't want around.

15. I used to have a rule
Mon Jun 2, 2014, 10:29 PM

of only keeping exactly one person on ignore.

Whenever Ignored would show up as replies in My Posts I'd know who it was.
If I wanted to add someone to ignore I'd remove the original ignore, and so forth.

My most recent single ignore was spamming the lounge one day. Then I wanted to add a new person but didn't want to see the spam so I broke the 1 ignore rule.

Now they don't show up in my posts at all, which is a good thing.

With the growing list some threads with a ton of replies are quite small. Just tonight I was the first reply and it was number 16 or so.

Because that person annoyed me. I think that person was mentally ill, but the Internet is no place to deal with that.

There are a few people who are vehement in their particular causes whom I've considered ignoring, but they often have a perspective that is valid and worth listening to, even if I don't agree with it. At the very least, I might learn something.

Most if the people I should be ignoring are posting in Discussionist, where I do occasionally visit and rarely post.

I eventually used the feature of ignore, and now DU is a much better experience for me. I can discuss issues with people that I disagree with, but are capable of being civil, and I don't have to read responses from people that are crazy.

All in all, it's a good thing.

I assumed you meant full ignore for the poll, so I answered 0.

I had a couple on ignore for awhile but then I realized I wouldn't see when they wrote a nasty response to something I posted. I prefer to see the crap they post so at least I'm aware of it. I normally won't engage but then I have the opportunity to alert, at least.

Of those on ignore, 1 is the person who sent me a super-nasty email shortly after I signed up for DU and I deleted it right away, not knowing that I should have forwarded it to an admin. It's mildly annoying to me that the person was never tombstoned, being such vile p.o.s., but their profile shows they haven't posted since 2012 so that's fine.

The others are posters who have posted vile, sometimes trollish (imo) crap but for some reason have not yet been tombstoned.

I delete them as they're tombstoned and the total blocks I've deleted over the years is quite high. Yep, you'd better believe it.

Mostly its simple stupidity I wish to avoid -- drunken fools, whacked-out conspiracy nuts ("BushCo caused the tsunami"), one-note wonders who post the same drivel over and over. . . Other people may choose what they perceive as the "high road" of tolerance and community, but I've no time for blithering foolishness and no interest in useless poppycock. Some will disagree but I figure they must have a surplus of life.

There are some posters whose every other utterance is imbecilic, and those who delight in being boorish with no regard for raising the level of conversation or thought. These too I choose to ignore. And it's not something I do lightly: before I click, I'm convinced these people have nothing to offer -- no insight, no new perspective, nothing to change either my attitude or thought. And though I perceive I have an open mind, that's no reason to let others use it as a sewer.

I also utilize ignore to remove trolls and other unsavory folk from my experience. Oh, I recognize they may be gone by morning, but how much more pleasant the evening is without them. I've never blocked anyone who intelligently debated me, but I'll not suffer fools gladly or madly.

If it makes people feel better about the DU "family" or some other such fantasy, you can occasionally clear your entire Ignore list. I do. Often, I find many of those I've shut off were soon after tombstoned, so I don't feel I missed anything.

That must make it hard to navigate the site, or awfully quiet anyway.

I never use it because I disagree with someone on issues. That's the nature of political discussion. What I can't tolerate is people who are more interested in personal vendettas than subject matter.

Then I clear it out every so often. Usually the people who end up on my ignore list are the people who get all hung up on a single issue and bring it up in totally unrelated topics...(Like "Scientists find cure for AIDS!" and their response in the thread is "But why hasn't congress done anything about Net Neutrality?&quot .

I still think the jury block is more effective than ignore. I'm not sure if I have ever been alerted on or not but i haven't had a post hidden. It's a goal to get to a thousand posts before getting one hidden.
