from the NYT:
The release of Sergeant Bergdahl (he was promoted in captivity) has created political problems for the Obama administration, which is having to defend his exchange for five Taliban detainees held at Guantánamo Bay, Cuba, but it also presents delicate politics for Republicans who are attacking, through surrogates, Americas last known prisoner of war.
The furious search for Sergeant Bergdahl, his critics say, led to the deaths of at least two soldiers and possibly six others in the area. Pentagon officials say those charges are unsubstantiated and are not supported by a review of a database of casualties in the Afghan war.
The soldiers began a frantic search for Sergeant Bergdahl using Predator drones, Apache attack helicopters and military tracking dogs. The most intense search operation, leaked war reports show, wound down after eight days well before the deaths of six soldiers on patrols in Paktika Province in late August and early September. But, complicating matters, some soldiers contend they were effectively searching for 90 days because of clear orders: If they heard rumors from locals that Sergeant Bergdahl might be nearby, they should patrol the area.
The anger toward Sergeant Bergdahl increased exponentially after Sept. 4, when they learned that two members of Third Platoon, which routinely went on tandem missions with Second Platoon and who they believed were also searching for Sergeant Bergdahl, had been killed in an ambush. Pfc. Matthew Martinek and Lt. Darryn Andrews, both of them friends of Mr. Cornelison, died in the ambush. A Defense Department official said it was unclear whether the two men were killed directly because of the search for Sergeant Bergdahl.

(46,416 posts)I have come to believe all this sudden "anger" by everyone who ever had the slightest thing to do with Bergdahl was pre-arranged by the Repubs in Congress, who surely knew Bergdahl would be freed soon, in order to shit all over his release for political gain. Goodness, well-written articles appear in the Daily Beast (home to Repub trolls Rogin and Lake) by platoon mates less than 48 hours after it was announced Bergdahl was coming home. Just ready to go, almost written in advance in anticipation of the release.

The first thing I noticed about Fox News in the early days was how quickly they got stories out. The lazy MSM mostly takes the first story that anyone puts out and runs with it. No one reads retractions.

(182,763 posts)Mr. Cornelison and Mr. Full both said they wanted to see Sergeant Bergdahl court-martialed as a deserter. Im not going to speak on the political, but I think that now that hes back, he needs to be held accountable, Mr. Full said.
Mr. Cornelison echoed Mr. Full. I wont get into the politics, but now that hes back he needs to be held 100 percent accountable, he said. For putting myself and 29 other people in my platoon in hell for 90 days.

(46,416 posts)(the Cody guy whose Tweets the day after Bergdahl's release became super-famous somehow, and he was suddenly provided with a right-wing affiliated lawyer named Richard Grenell--all in 24 hours) on her program, according to RW blogs. Think about that. Think about the sudden media availability of all of these "Really Angry" platoon-mates who are lawyering up and all delivering the same message.

(112,102 posts)One of the respondents noted that in the late 60s Dr. May demonstrated retina reattachment surgeries to the Communist Chinese. Therefore, it follows that he could be accused of rendering aid to potential spies. Dr, May is a typical Republican hypocrite and fortunately he lost to Randy Neguebauer in the GOP primary for US House of Representative District #19.

(85,986 posts). . . really just to demonize and taint Sgt. Bergdahl and the administration; red meat for clicks and ratings; ammunition for knee-jerk calls to punish this soldier based on little more than internet rumor.

their losses of fellow soldiers that taints their objectivity..but even so, I find it disturbing.
Much more information is required, they could have waited.
That Republicans would join in to bash Obama is no surprise at all...that is all they ever do.

When you go around calling people lazy idiots, they just might attack you in return. So I'd take anything they say with a block of salt.

(7,234 posts)I don't expect the Pentagon to say anything that makes the boss look bad and going on the assumption that 5 Taliban were secretly released from Gitmo as trade over a deserter who allegedly caused the deaths of 5-6 soldiers who went looking for him does look VERY bad for the administration.
I don't think we're getting the full details of what exactly happened here and it'll be interesting to see what comes out over the next few weeks. For all we know this could have been a covert operation that went south after the Afghan CIA Station Chief's name was released by accident.

(85,986 posts). . .and 'what comes out over the next few weeks' should be substantiated as verifiable fact before throwing it around the internet to see what sticks.
I'm not buying that the Pentagon is covering something up as you suggest they might. Without evidence to that effect, that assertion would be as reckless and irresponsible as the rest of the claims, so far.
