It is not hyperbole to say that every DUer should read this article:

http://www.philly.com/philly/obituaries/20140602_Lewis_Katz___The_most_unique_man_I_ever_met_.html

It is the story of the man killed in the plane crash the other day. It is a tale of someone who came from nothing, became a billionaire, and gave back at every turn. This is a real loss, not only of a person, a philanthropist, a humanist, but also a great Democrat.

Yes, you can spend time reading threads about the usual meta-DU nonsense which I will admit are amusing, or you can take five minutes of your time and peruse this serious essay which, to my knowledge, is entirely true and without fluff or pandering.

This is a far greater loss for our community than most.

I am extremely fortunate to work for such people - successful people who pay their workforce well, offer full benefits and give back a great deal to the community.

Very inspirational article, thanks.

"Lewis was the epitome of the word 'mensch,'" said a devastated Ed Snider, chairman of Comcast Spectacor, which owns the Flyers. "He gave everything he had to make a difference."

Last month, when Temple announced it would name its medical school after Mr. Katz, he said his mother had wanted him to be a doctor - but he couldn't stand the sight of blood.

Hemophobia doesn't make you less of a mensch.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blood_phobia

Blood phobia (also, AE: hemophobia, BE: haemophobia, from Greek ?ἷ?? - haima, "blood"[1] and ?ό??? - phobos, "fear"[2]) is the extreme and irrational fear of blood. Severe cases of this fear can cause physical reactions that are uncommon in most other fears, specifically vasovagal syncope (fainting).[3] Similar reactions can also occur with trypanophobia and traumatophobia. For this reason, these phobias are categorized as "blood-injection-injury phobia" by the DSM-IV.[4] Some early texts refer to this category as "blood-injury-illness phobia."[5]

A quick google for the first sentence locates the source: http://whatdoesitmean.com/index1774.htm

If you've never heard of Sorcha Faal:

http://rationalwiki.org/wiki/Sorcha_Faal

Sorcha Faal is the alleged author of an ongoing series of "reports" published at WhatDoesItMean.com, whose work is of such quality that even other conspiracy nutters don't think much of it. There is a high chance that "Sorcha Faal" is actually David Booth, the owner/operator of the website, or someone collaborating with him.

It sounds like the people who loved him and who presumably will carry on his work are good people, too.

Shows that appearances are deceptive. Not ALL milionnaires are assholes. Ase well as this isn't true that ALL the poors are nice people.

but like a few others in this thread I don't think this is what we should aspire to. I'm glad he was a good guy & gave back. Those of us who can do more should given what we are dealing with. BUT that doesn't change the fact that capitalism is a horrible economic system.

I can't agree that his loss is "greater" as I don't place humans above each other based on wealth. But I am saddened at the loss of a mensch no matter his political status or station in life.

There is no guarantee, but his one never forgot that the way to truly insure it wasn't to screw people over.

It was to invest in the welfare of his neighbors, not his bankers.
