Neil deGrasse Tyson: When the rich start losing money, they’ll take climate change seriously

Astrophysicist Neil deGrasse Tyson characterized the naysaying surrounding climate change as par for the course in footage aired on Monday from his interview with MSNBC host Chris Hayes,

“The evidence will show up when they need more evidence,” deGrasse Tyson told Hayes. “More storms, more coastlines getting lost. People beginning to lose their wealth. People, if they begin to lose their wealth, they change their mind real fast, I’ve found — particularly in a capitalist culture.”

In the interview, which was filmed last week in New York City, the Cosmos host said that denial of scientific truths generally goes through three stages: First, skeptics say it can’t be true. Then, they say it contradicts the Bible. Finally, they admit the clues were there all along.

A few may be inclined towards benevolent action and acting in the public spirit. But it's more believable to me that they will take whatever is needed to protect their remaining shadow of a lifestyle and use their police and military to keep the barbarians away from the gates of the castle.

Even many of us non-rich people who accept it is real, don't take it seriously.

It's called disaster capitalism for a reason. I'm sure they have big plans already to implement radical reforms in the midst of all of the chaos and destruction.

In fact, I have little doubt that they welcome the coming death and destruction. They are vultures ready to be served a meal. A very
lavish and exquisite meal to their minds no doubt.

So, I don't know if climate change will impact the rich negatively on a financial basis (insurance industries excepted).

Of course, if the planet starts to become inhospitable for human life throughout the entire biosphere, then they better hope that they have established some off-world colonies that have a hope and a prayer of lasting. All of that money and power won't mean squat then.

they get to continue to pollute. Tthey get to buy land that has been storm damaged for next to nothing.

They know climate change is real. They are encouraging it. Mostly the poor will be effected and the more of us that die, the better in their opinion

he was talking about all that beach front property. Not a lot of poor people in this country with beach houses. He also pointed out that if we lose the ice caps the water level in New York would go up to the Statue of Liberty's elbow. That includes Wall Street, right? Sure they can re-locate eventually, but it would get their attention. And kind of hard to deny climate change when you need scuba gear to go to work.

desert the beaches for safer locations. no problem. Great opportunity if you want to spend your last few years on earth with an ocean view.

that's why I said in this country. But you're probably right. It's only a matter of time before beach front in this country becomes the domain of the poor because it'll be too dangerous for the wealthy to live there. Sick.

They will front run any change...if they own an industry that makes widgets and they know that the widget is obsolete they start buying up the replacement for the widget...and with higher profits.
They play a game they cannot lose.

the new coastlines created by by rising waters. Like the honey-badger, they "don't give a shit." I don't think they'll care until typical daily temperatures are in the 100s in January in NYC.
