Virginia group hoists second huge Confederate flag along interstate

Motorists traveling a major Virginia highway now have a second supersized Confederate flag to catch their attention, even though the first banner drew protests and debate.

The Virginia Flaggers, a group that celebrates the heritage of the Confederacy, raised the 20-by-30-foot battle flag on Saturday alongside Interstate 95 near Fredericksburg, some 60 miles (96.6 kilometers) north of the state’s capital of Richmond.

The group raised its first flag last year along the highway, immediately drawing complaints that it promoted racism and slavery, and leading 24,000 people to sign an online petition against its display.

“We have no problems with people who have different points of view, but we also want them to respect our views,” said Barry Isenhour, a spokesman for the Flaggers.

Is it the size of the flag that has people upset now?

Personally I do not go to nor do business in the south for stuff like this I avoid the place like the plague.

The south has been openly racist for over 200 years even before we were a nation, southern racism will not be ending anytime soon.

Racists are going to be racists it is what they do. As long as we the people allow it we will always have it.

Once was enough for me. I felt like I had entered a time machine and got deposited in antebellum Virginia. Seems all the streets are named after Confederates, stars and bars flying everywhere. Couldn't wait to get out of there -- I was totally creeped out.

flying the other day on a P/U truck parked at a bank. Couldn't miss them since they were almost the standard house flag size - one on either corner of the back. I really shouldn't have, but a feeling of total disgust went through me. I did check the truck for MD tags and a set of balls. MD tags were there -- it was missing the latter.

The only satisfaction I could think regarding the driver of that pickup was that flying flags that size must be eating into his gas money.

Looks like the disease I saw a few years ago driving through VA, the Carolinas, and Georgia is spreading north Actually took a pic of the bigass confederate flag flying next to the highway on our trip down to FL a couple of years ago (thought it was in Georgia or FL - definitely further south than VA). I know it's just a flag, but being a northerner, it did make me feel uncomfortable seeing it flying next to the highway -- and I'm a white northerner. I didn't see it as a statement of a single group, I saw it as a statement of the people of the area I was traveling through. I felt the same way seeing it on that truck in my own town. It truly has no business flying again -- it's nothing but a flag of division.

Amazing what can happen to nasty flags when fireworks are involved.
