Last edited Tue Jun 3, 2014, 04:26 PM - Edit history (1)
Here's a link to an online letter from MPPThe link above is to the Marijuana Policy Project Page with a letter to sign and send to your Senator in support of defunding the DEA's raids on legal medical marijuana facilities.
More than half of the states in the U.S. now have medical marijuana provisions. It's time for the federal government to respond to the will of the voter regarding marijuana's legal status.
This letter is one way to get them to respond.
Thanks!

(25,960 posts)the reality is that the U.S. has a mesh of anti-marijuana laws and Congress is the body that is tasked with dealing with legislation.
Obama has let Congress know he considers alcohol less dangerous. Holder has told Congress he's willing to work with them on marijuana rescheduling.
This is part of the process.
Congress needs to do its job.
Romulox
(25,960 posts)Marijuana rescheduling has already been delegated by the Congress to the DEA. Pretending that the President's hands are tied is dishonest and counterproductive. Similarly, pretending that a new process is required to reschedule marijuana when one already exists, and "our" politicians simply choose not to do so.
RainDog
(28,784 posts)You don't know what you're talking about. There are several ways to reschedule. Congress is one of them, and the quickest. The other would be through Holder, but, according to the wording of the CSA, this would require hearings and referrals to federal orgs like the FDA, etc.
Congress has legislation, written last year, that could be resurrected. It's sitting in Republican legislator Sensenbrenner's office.
I'm not pretending the President's hands are tied. I have never said that here, so please don't put words in my mouth that I didn't say.
I'm just tired of people who can't appreciate those within the political process using this process to create change. I've also said, repeatedly, that if Congress refuses to do its job, I would hope the Obama administration would take action on this issue before leaving office - to decriminalize.
If you want to argue about Obama - go somewhere else, please. I'm not interested in making this an argument about Obama. I'm interested in asking Congress to do the work for which they were elected - which is to represent the will of the American voter, who overwhelmingly approves of the use of medical marijuana upon a doctor's recommendation.

(25,960 posts)You don't contradict a word I say, but I am "wrong"? Compelling stuff.
Newsflash: holding the Executive branch's feet to fire is part and parcel of the existing political process.
RainDog
(28,784 posts)I said this post is not about Obama - it's about taking legislative action to move an issue forward instead of just whining that Obama doesn't do everything I want when I want it - or other people as well.
I have no problem with holding Obama's feet to the fire on this issue.
You are obviously unaware of the many posts I have made about this very thing.
I am just tired of posts being hijacked by people who don't have something worthwhile to contribute and only want to complain about what isn't, instead of working for what can be.
If you want to sign this letter or call your Senator -GREAT!
If you want to complain about Obama - feel free to start another thread about that topic.
THIS TOPIC IS ABOUT TAKING ACTION NOW.
But the strange thing is those here who just want to complain don't ever seem to want to take action... at least that's my impression.
RainDog
(28,784 posts)the more you and others here who claim to speak for "the left left" snark at me (it seems no one is allowed to have an opinion or talk about issues without somehow blaming Obama) anyway - the more I see this here, the more I consider the arguments made by these same people as less convincing or valuable.
something for you and others to think about.
no one would ever think I'm not to the left of Obama, on many issues. I guess Obama should thank you and others, because more and more people will see this sort of thing as nothing but attempts to undercut those who want to work for change.
This is the only thing you ever have to say about this issue - in any response to anything I've ever posted about this issue, at least.
Even when activists (the MPP, not me, tho I'm sharing here) are asking people to take action on something that is pending in the legislature right now.
that's really something, when I think about it. not something you should be proud of, imo.
