Of course, this little DU post on the Bowe Bergdahl WHAAARGARBL storm won't derail the crazy train, but here goes. From today's New York Times:
Rear Adm. John F. Kirby, the Pentagon spokesman, said that there was a larger matter at play: The American military does not leave soldiers behind. When youre in the Navy, and you go overboard, it doesnt matter if you were pushed, fell or jumped, he said. Were going to turn the ship around and pick you up.
OK? OK. Period, end of file.

(58,179 posts)People have been combing those jungles for the last 35 years to find bonemeal they can bring home to give peace to the families of the missing. Not sure what your one-sentence point is here.

(15,220 posts)And it should shut some of the crazy trainers up, at least for a minute or two.
What is really infuriating me are the attacks on Bowe Bergdahl's father. I mean, what did that man do except EVERYTHING that he could to try to get his son back. Family values and all that, you know???!!!

(19,581 posts)This simple explanation makes no sense. You believe it if you want too. I want to know what was so special about this soldier that we went to great lengths to secure his release.

(7,759 posts)My nephew who returned from Afghanistan after serving in Iraq was sickened to hear what is being said about this action. He would not relate everything but he feels that if people only knew some of the things that really go on in and around the battle fields in Afghanistan they wouldn't be so quick to judge Bowe. He even said that he is surprised that more soldiers with a conscience don't walk off. He also feels that Bowe will not be able tell all he knows even in a court martial trial. Quite a few do walk off and end it with suicide...another untold story.

(6,891 posts)and pick you up if they're steaming to engage the enemy, or to establish a tactic advantage before the enemy can. Even though no effort is spared to keep casualties low, the welfare of military personnel is always subordinate to the needs of the mission. It has to be.

(3,580 posts)and until he gets to tell his side of the story, we don't know what happened. I have 2 nephews who did multiple tours in Iraq and Afghanistan, they are afraid to talk about it because as one of them said "people would call me a traitor or terrorist if I talked about what I think" He is a regular american guy who served multiple tours and said 2 weeks into his 1st deployment he kew it was bullshit. So I'm not so quick to condemn this guy, I'm just glad we didn't leave him behind.

That might make sense in a way...but, still... MIA could be captured...and no one might know about it.
