A short, vaguely paradoxical, thought about the absence of women in movies.

"This film is exclusively, or almost exclusively, about men" is not a defect in a movie.
"All, or nearly all, these films are exclusively, or almost exclusively, about men" is a defect in a movie industry.

I'm not sure what conclusions follow from this.

who are not entirely male centered and who do not exist solely as loot when the protagonist wins whatever fight he's in.

One suspects Hollywood producers have rarely met women and have never gotten to know any of them. They're certainly unaware we have interesting lives once we're out of our 20s.

Women only as devices to bring coffee and supply orifices is a pretty common misconception.

I'll stick to European films, thanks, subtitles and all. The dehumanization of women in US films is depressing.

There are plenty of good actresses getting good roles, but they are on TV. Elizabeth Moss is superb in Mad Men. Taylor Schilling in Orange and Robin Wright in House of Cards are also very good. Maggie Smith is hilarious as the Dowager Countess in Downton.

F*** the big money studio movies. The roles for women are crap because major Hollywood movies are marketed toward teenage boys and the formulaic rom-com hordes. The dialogue is so cringeworthy that I'm embarrassed just to sit through the previews.
