I was born and raised in the Kansas City area, so I know how intense mid-western storms are, but I've never seen hail that big!

That's terrible.
If there's one thing vinyl siding does not protect against, it's hail. Our neighbors had a few holes in their siding from a very mild hailstorm (maybe pea gravel size?) a few years ago. With baseball size hail, yeah, the stuff would be shredded.
I heard most people in one town that had cars not parked in garages had no glass left at all. Crazy.

Fort Calhoun resident Tom Skelton said hail larger than a baseball hit his house and went through the roof and into his attic. Water began running into his kitchen. He set up buckets to catch the water.
