First-- The facts I as I know them:
At some point in mid-2009, Army Private Bergdahl went missing from his unit in Afghanistan. Shortly thereafter, units of the Taliban claimed to have captured him, and the Army verified that he was a prisoner.
Between 2009 and 2011, while he was still prisoner, the Army promoted him. Twice. Once to Specialist, and then to Sergeant.
Sometime in 2012, official US Government channels confirmed that they had engaged in negotiations with the Taliban to free Bergdahl.
In February of this year, the government again confirmed that negotiations were underway "via intermediaries" to obtain Bergdahl's release.
A few days ago, President Obama announced that Bergdahl would be released, and that five prisoners from Guantanamo Bay would be released to Qatar.
Since then:
- Various elements of Congress have gone ballistic, claiming that they were "out of the loop,"
- Various elements of the US media and a swathe of the punditry have been having major pearl-clutching attacks about "negotiating with terrorists"; and
- Allegations are flying about Bergdahl being a deserter, mentally ill, a criminal, etc.
Are those facts substantially correct?
May I ask one question, please, particularly aimed at the active-duty and veteran military service members on Democratic Underground?
How would you feel about the next time you have to head out into enemy territory, if the consensus of opinion generally resolves to "We should have let the crazy bastard rot there, and kept the terrorists in Gitmo"?
I'm just wondering.
Because, as far as I can tell, once again this Administration has been making difficult choices in a delicate situation, attempting to balance security and transparency, keeping options open and an over-riding priority in view, and has achieved that priority.
Who is most likely to regard that as a Worst Case Scenario? And why? And what are the implications for our active duty military in hostile territory?

(4,713 posts)especially here. Many of us agree that he should have been brought home & have no problem with how it was handled. Deployments were just part of life, I would never have considered leaving one of my squad ever.
Now handling him over here after the investigations come out is another story. At this point if the allegations are true they already have more than enough evidence.

(20,759 posts)Indeed, once he's home, the allegations will need careful and transparent investigation.
I suppose getting used to having media and punditry second-guessing is part of the deal, but it does seem a bit counter-productive to me.

Arizona Senator and former P.O.W John McCain talks about renewed efforts to bring home an American in Taliban captivity.
That was one interview. Now he's spitting bile. Pardon the source, but this is where he was happily spewing:

(13,485 posts)resemblance to just about everything political in the US these days namely to damn the facts and support disinformation for the sake of political positioning. Facts are so bland when disinformation can be made so entertaining and that is what has happened again in this case.
I know I am not answering your questions; I'm not qualified. But I am making an observation.
Thanks for bearing up facts as we know them and questioning all positions. That's how we determine was is real which is not a readily available commodity these days.

(5,279 posts)That really solidified the "All come home" movement.
I concur with that. Nobody gets abandoned.
I feel that, even if you go deserter/complete pacifist/immigrant to a country we are/were in conflict with. As long as you didn't join the military action against us; at some point you get to come home. Even if just as a foreign tourist years later.

(172 posts)As an enlisted person, we would have known what was going on with one of our people and would have intervened. As an officer, I would have asked some serious questions of my SNCOs and junior Marines how this happened. Were you watching out for this kid? Were there warning signs? I have heard he was unhappy in the Army. That accounts for the majority at any given time. Where was his command leadership? Who are they and where are they now? I couldn't give a shit about what a few of his peers say.
I remember that this happened to a guy named Bush. He just walked off. Cheney never walked on.

(2,060 posts)Captain, Vietnam era. I have been fielding calls all day from servicemen who I kept in contact with over the years, a few of which I hired at the company I started years after the war. Almost to a man none believe as you apparently do for a variety of reasons. But that's all I'll say. Not interested in the resultant flame. I'm trying to back-channel through military contacts to see what really happened and what the general opinion of the noncoms is.

(20,759 posts)I'm well aware that those of us who don't share your experience "think different."
I'm trying to learn.
Mentally, when I try to put myself in the place of someone serving in hostile territory, the first thing that comes to mind is "It might have been me... Next time it could be me..."
Maybe that's completely off base from reality.
I'd like to understand.

(2,060 posts)got a email from a Navy guy today that worked a PBR on the Thu Bồn River picking up mainly dead and injured American soldiers. He was so mad he could barely speak. You see things that leave an indelible print in your mind. In my opinion, based on what was known and suspected, this particular trade should not have been made and the US will pay for it dearly. I have nothing else to say.
