Now handling him over here after the investigations come out is another story. At this point if the allegations are true they already have more than enough evidence.

Indeed, once he's home, the allegations will need careful and transparent investigation.

I suppose getting used to having media and punditry second-guessing is part of the deal, but it does seem a bit counter-productive to me.

I feel that, even if you go deserter/complete pacifist/immigrant to a country we are/were in conflict with. As long as you didn't join the military action against us; at some point you get to come home. Even if just as a foreign tourist years later.

As an enlisted person, we would have known what was going on with one of our people and would have intervened. As an officer, I would have asked some serious questions of my SNCOs and junior Marines how this happened. Were you watching out for this kid? Were there warning signs? I have heard he was unhappy in the Army. That accounts for the majority at any given time. Where was his command leadership? Who are they and where are they now? I couldn't give a shit about what a few of his peers say.
I remember that this happened to a guy named Bush. He just walked off. Cheney never walked on.

Captain, Vietnam era. I have been fielding calls all day from servicemen who I kept in contact with over the years, a few of which I hired at the company I started years after the war. Almost to a man none believe as you apparently do for a variety of reasons. But that's all I'll say. Not interested in the resultant flame. I'm trying to back-channel through military contacts to see what really happened and what the general opinion of the noncoms is.

I'm well aware that those of us who don't share your experience "think different."

Mentally, when I try to put myself in the place of someone serving in hostile territory, the first thing that comes to mind is "It might have been me... Next time it could be me..."

Maybe that's completely off base from reality.

got a email from a Navy guy today that worked a PBR on the Thu Bồn River picking up mainly dead and injured American soldiers. He was so mad he could barely speak. You see things that leave an indelible print in your mind. In my opinion, based on what was known and suspected, this particular trade should not have been made and the US will pay for it dearly. I have nothing else to say.

I, for one, am thrilled that we got him back - and if that means negotiating with despicable people, well, our government and military officials do that every day - they're called congress.
