(9,126 posts)Those ignorant enough to think that animals can't think or feel are missing out on one of the greatest relationships on this Earth. I could only hope to be grieved like that by any living being. Her owner must have been a wonderful person to be loved so much.

(8,646 posts)Birds are a lot smarter than people give them credit for. My old cockatiel (who lived with my parents), when he lost his mate, screeched for hours, even through the night and then went into mourning for a month where he didn't sing at all. He did the same thing when my parents' dog died. (Then when the old bird died, my parents new dog howled at the loss of his bird friend).
I saw a documentary about ravens and crows - they actually have 'bird funerals'. It was extremely touching how they gather and have a minute of silence for their fallen friend.
So many animals have wide array of feelings and a sense of self-awareness that we are only now beginning to understand.
