"I may be a Republican," he scoffed, "but don't try to take away my social security."
Apparently hypocrisy isn't simply accommodated; it's vital.
"I may be a vegan," he might as well have said, "but don't try to take away my steak and my fur coat."

(12,336 posts)Once, I went (very briefly) to a bagger "rally" and confronted a guy who said he was an ex fireman. I asked the guy if he could see the error of his ways, collecting a Government funded pension from a vital Government job and he said that he was a "city firefighter, not a federal fire fighter. See the difference?" I was laughing so hard I just shook my head and walked away from the guy.
"I want these lousy roads fixed but I don't want to pay taxes to have it done." That sort of thing.

(9,231 posts)Talk about cognitive dissonance! How can they possibly be that stupid (and they teach our kids) and not realize that their decent pay and great benefits are thanks to the very union that their party is dead-set on destroying.
Or they do realize it and figure that a previous generation fought that fight and it's a permanent done deal, so they can join the "I've got mine, screw you" club. Kinda like the younger female generation is "not feminists" because their mothers fought for their rights and now they're safe forever. Right.

(63,084 posts)That same conversation happens in corporate workplaces around the country, with employees complaining about unions while enjoying all of the benefits that have thanks to union efforts: 40 hour week, paid time off, worker's comp, health insurance, workplace safety, etc.
Blows my mind every time.
