nastiness and could not care less about them. But the fact is that while Discussionist is far from a perfect example of perfect civility, it is FAR MORE civil than this one at this point. I don't know why, maybe they are intimidated by the jury system which does seem to be working better over there, but it IS more civil, and that is a fact.

affect this country. I want to confront them. Some are simply unaware of many of the facts they don't get on Fox etc. I'm not sure I will change any minds, but I can provide them with facts they have either have ignored or were never aware of. And minds DO change, they HAVE to if we are ever to get any real change in this country.

That won't happen by living in an echo chamber. It happens when people find common ground on important issues. And it won't happen if we constantly attack half the country. It happens when we find reasonable people who are willing to stop the name calling and personal attacks and listen to what others are thinking. I don't waste time on those who are simply nasty for the sake of being nasty, who obviously hate 'the left', cultists iow, nor do I waste much time with their counterparts here, who ironically ALSO hate 'the left'.

But in the middle there are plenty of people who actually do care about this country but have different ideas about how to make it better. They, many of them, are as embarrassed by THEIR extremists as we are by ours.

Nothing was every accomplished in this country by people hiding in their own camps launching insults at each other. Anything good that happened happened when enough people were willing on both sides, to work for the benefit of the COUNTRY.

Because the only DEMOCRATIC forum is this one.

Discussionist is for people from all political walks of life.

There are a few trolly assholes over there that make the place suck for the rest of the crowd. Three in particular stand out, they're conservative and stupid.

That said, in my read of the site, there are some civil conversations happening--it's just unfortunate that a few people seem determined to poop in the pool.

The quality of discourse is not terribly good, unfortunately. There are a few people making a good faith effort, but those jerks with their snark and the "Cave" guy with his "primitives" and "dummies" foolishness (talk about dysfunctional! I can't imagine having to live life as "that guy"--so hate-filled, obsessing about a website! How stupid and petty!) make their side look bad.

Who knows, in time maybe the level of conversation will elevate. It's a good relief valve, anyway.

IMO, most assholes are often very intelligent and know they're being assholes

Whereas bigots are, according to many here at DU, rather stupid and clueless, and really can't help being that way. I mean, who can actually help being "batshit crazy", etc., right?

I would rather deal with people who don't know they're stupid than with people who are smart enough not to be stupid but who insist on being assholes.

IOW, there's always a chance that a bigot can be educated.

As far as I know, however, there's no cure for asshole-ism.

Whatever floats one's boat...
