Bridge over Christina River, rt 495 closed-danger of collapse.

Infrastructure!! infrastructure!! infrastructure!! infrastructure!!

WARNING - Delaware is now warning all traffic to stay off rt 495 from the PA state line south to its end...there will be extensive work required in that area. This just was announced a few minutes ago.
------
The Christina River bridge, part of US 495, a major North - South route on the east coast had been closed for evaluation and repair. Engineers first noticed that 4 of the support columns had tilted, and closed the bridge several days ago, re routing traffic to I 95 and other smaller roads. More recent examination has found that 8 support columns have twisted, and one side of the bridge is over 16" higher than the other, when they should both be equal height. Engineers also say that the problem is below ground, and will require a long term repair.

Which on I95 is 3:00-7:00p.m. This is going to dump all the tractor trailers onto I95 which will really make a mess. They didn't have any time to develop alternative routes and publicize them. Not fun for commuters or the unsuspecting.

It seems the columns have tilted by 2o on 2 years.

Don't be surprised if a complete rebuild is necessary

And the big thing is that I-95 has height restrictions, whereas 495 didn't, so I don't know what the big trucks are going to do. We just got an email from DART stating the train and bus times from various stations to Wilmington.

This is what DelDOT should recommend for truckers:

Stay on I-295 across the Delaware Memorial Bridge
Continue on I-295 instead of the NJ Turnpike
@ Exit 11, Take US 322 West, cross the Commodore Berry Bridge (cut tolls by 1/2)
RT onto I-95 in PA

To do this, they may have to reimburse New Jersey for toll revenue on the CBB because all of the other options suck, do you really want trucks on I-95 or US RT 13 through town?
