Public pulse letter: Carrying a gun doesn’t elicit respect

I know David. I haven't seen him since his kids graduated years ago. He was NEVER a political type.

Pictures of Rambo wannabes wearing their guns in restaurants remind me of when my childhood friends and I would march around with our toy guns and feel like big shots. Toy guns looked real back then and gave us a sense of power not normally available to little kids.

I suppose some little boys never grow up. It seems to me that those who are unable to earn respect carry around their bigger, more dangerous toys in an effort to impress others.

Some claim to be heroes who are protecting us from psychos who would use similar guns to kill innocent people. This doesn’t make much sense since we have a concealed-carry law. Who would make himself the first target of a killer by exposing his weapon? Carrying an exposed gun seems similar to flashing a wad of cash just to impress shallow-minded companions.

Target shooting and hunting are fun sports, but please leave your big guns at the range or in a gun safe at home. You might be able to frighten more mature adults with your toys, but a loser with a gun is still a loser. Respect must be earned with much effort. It cannot be purchased at a gun show.

Mature adults, no matter how much they love playing the darn things, myself included, would STOP

Cost too high, not responsible, not mature choice.

weapons from home to field (and locked in between).... Or, for the very brief period required to transport directly to and from repair or legal sale venue.

Open carry otherwise serves no other purpose than to badger, bully and abuse others' rights.

I think it is despicable they shove their guns down our throats by displaying them publicly but I'm happy I can easily recognize these crazy morons and keep my distance from them.

family did a favor for those who believe in gay rights. When the relatively sane fence-sitters realized that those who opposed gay rights were different only in degree, not in kind, from Phelps et al., they recoiled in disgust.

Similarly, by showing what the NRA's extreme ideology leads to, these guys might actually end up enabling us to enact reasonable gun laws.
