Dear Mr Open Carry,

I understand you feel a need to carry your weapon to some of the most dangerous places on the planet. You know, Target, Chipotle, Wal-Mart. After all you never know when an IED is going to go off in the housewares section.

The problem lies in the fact that I can't tell you apart from the lunatics. When I see someone with a real gun in a toy store my brain automatically thinks "batshit crazy".

Now I understand that there is a difference between you and the batshit crazy guy, but I can't tell just by looking. Is there some way you folks can identify yourselves as the "good guy with a gun". Frankly, most of you, when you strap your big old semi-auto onto your back and march into a McDonalds for lunch, wearing your American Flag shorts, and "don't tread on me" t-shirt look batshit crazy to me. So maybe there is some kind of uniform you can wear, or a sign or something, anything, to differentiate you the responsible "good guy with a gun" in Kroeger to the batshit crazy guy in Kroeger with a gun.

Look this would be a public service, you could wear a uniform like a cop or a soldier or maybe you can get Curtis Sliwa to design you a special beret!
Look all I'm saying is I can't tell the difference between you the "good guy with a gun" or Jeffery Fucking Dhamer. You all look crazy to me. So how bout a little help eh?

Wed Jun 4, 2014, 01:28 PM
Jun 2014

We see and hear a guy scream out in evil laughter as he busts out of the front door of another restaurant about 75 yards down the street. He's wearing ripped clothes and swinging a giant machete above his head. He runs straight towards us but stops about 10 feet from us and peacefully walks into the restaurant we were going into. As we arrive and open the door we see the guy laughing with his friends, one of whom is playing with his plastic machete and commenting on how real it looked.

My friend had just started work as a university police officer and told me that he was just about to pull his off duty piece on the guy. It was Halloween.

Open carriers make it tough to tell the good guys from the guy who is five seconds from starting his rampage. If a good guy makes the wrong call on the open carrier and pulls his concealed weapon, what's to keep the two guys from, fearing each other is a bad guy, starting a shootout? It will happen.

The open carry activists who consider themselves "good guys" could identify themselves by wearing large prosthetic phalluses, like those worn in penis processions in certain Greek and Japanese festivals. In Greece, they often add goat bells at the base of the shaft, so you can hear them approaching.
An added bonus: those of us who are apprehensive about "open carry" would have notice to leave or hide at the sound of goat bells.

Out of sight, out of mind has made America complacent to gun violence. In California open carry was banned and thanks to the recent 9th circuit court ruling, concealed carry permit applications are off the charts.

In many cases you won't know Billy Bob is a gun nut until he's going around shooting people, Open Carry brings them out of the shadows.

America needs to see this up close and in their faces.

Concealed carry allows crazy people to carry without anyone knowing. The public should have the right to know who is carrying weapons so they can avoid or even fire them.

Say if I'm in Target waiting in line, thanks to concealed carry I have no idea if the pissed off guy in front of is carrying until its too late but with Open Carry, I can see it and leave WAY ahead of time.

Legal concealed carry eliminates a major tool for preventing crime. Before the concealed carry craze the police could safely assume anyone carrying a concealed weapon was up to no good.

If someone wants to rob a liquor store, the police can not do anything to stop him until he has the gun actually pointed at the clerk.

I grew up on a farm. I have tried explaining that reality as it relates to the need for firearms to people in the anti-gun crowd who just flat out refuse to believe me.

I live in the city. I find the pro-gun crowd is just as irrational in their refusal to accept that restrictions on carry in the city is a good idea.

Frankly, both sides of this debate disgust me. You are both trying to force your wants/needs where they are not wanted/needed. The people in the cities actually know what's good for them. Just as you know what's good outside the cities.

Heller says that you have a right to self defense. If you have a constitutional right to self defense then why is that right restricted to just the home like Heller suggests? Several Federal appeals courts have said that there is no such limit and the right to self defense extends beyond the home. That is why California and Hawaii are switching to "shall issue" vice "may issue" concealed carry licensing.

I am not forcing anything on you - take your complaints to the court system.

Guns are useful tools but would I be allowed to go into Target wielding a running chain saw? It can be argued that I am using the 2nd Amendment... I don't need a license or permit. A chainsaw is a weapon... I think they made a film called the "Texas Chainsaw Massacre".

So are you fine with me having a running chainsaw in public? I'm not. I'm not fine with people carrying around guns in public at all. Now if that gun was carried in such a way that it is blatantly obvious that the gun is for self defense then I'd feel a little more comfortable... but personally I don't feel totally comfortable with that either.

I didn't grow up in a gun culture... I'm more comfortable with an unarmed law enforcement officer than one who is.

On edit, I hesitate to add this, but how much more of a target does it make an establishment an inviting target for some nutjob simply because it sports a "No Open Carry" sticker at its entrance?

If gun owners aren't willing to jump through hoops, follow
reasonable regulations, have their "rights" reasonably
curtailed (in the same way we have vehicle speed limits on
highways, require licensing, age limits, regular relicensing,
registration) to make it much harder for the wrong people
to have guns -- then they are not fit to have guns either.

someone who thinks he (or she) is all hot shit because they can walk around slinging a gun. They get all bravado when they see something funny and then it's *BLAM BLAM BLAM* - protecting the world from 'Evil DOers' armed with a bag of skittles and can of Arizona Ice Tea.

They'll be the ones with the rifle butt pointing AWAY from their heads! (Sarcasm, of course) A few hours at a gun course does not a competent cowboy make!

Seriously - your point is a valid one and one that I have thought about. I have no desire to be in any business whereby I am forced to make a determination of who is carrying legally (and competently) and who is going to blow my brains out. I will simply remove myself from any premises where I see a gun, and hope to live to tell about it.

It's absurd that I have to live in a society that's allowing this type of stupid behavior.

25. The right to live in fear....
Wed Jun 4, 2014, 03:24 PM
Jun 2014

I argued with one of my former co-workers about this. His right to live in fear is considered more important than my right to feel safe.

The 'anti-gubmint' crowd doesn't care that a drone can kill them from 50 miles away, the reality is our armed services are so well equipped that they don't need to send troops to root you out.

Bottom line, those that live in fear are afraid of their fellow citizens.

It's a dangerous world out there and that big, ugly gun keeps them from the worst fate they can imagine--being laughed at in public.

Their fragile masculinity can remain intact with those enormous guns slung across their backs.

Note that this is a little different from the guys with the discreetly holstered pistols. Their paranoia is a little milder and free floating. The gun keeps them feeling safe.

Of course, the real BAMFs out there go unarmed.

It's a form of protest. A stupid, ill-considered, counterproductive form of protest...an object illustration of the "law of unintended consequences." Someone actually concerned with their safety while shopping (and who isn't an idiot) would carry concealed, so as to not make themselves the first person someone with bad intent will target.

45. So you're walking across a major shopping center parking lot,
Wed Jun 4, 2014, 04:03 PM
Jun 2014

and you come across an open carry demonstrator with his semi auto proudly displayed. Up to this point the day has seemed uneventful, and nothing out of the ordinary has taken place. Which of the following is the FIRST thought that is probably going to spring to mind?

1). You think to yourself, "Gee, I'm sure glad that fellow is here to protect me from any terrorists that might be storming the mall this afternoon, I certainly feel safer for his armed presence!".

2.) You look around, trying to find out what possible reason there is for someone to be packing heat in the middle of the supermarket parking lot. You feel vaguely uneasy, but try to sidle closer to your armed protector, figuring he knows what he is doing and will protect you too. After all, your both Americans, right?

3.) The minute you see some nut job armed to the teeth in a location that doesn't warrant it, you know your'e dealing with a sick individual, and you leave as quickly as possible, prior, hopefully, to becoming collateral damage in the latest NRA publicity stunt.

I'm betting we could actually use this as a teapartier identity screening.

There are circumstances that can make people - some more easily than others - go from zero to batshitcrazy before you can say "twenty rounds in an innocent bystander." I prefer that my total strangers have to go through a little something before they can launch a hundred deadly missiles into random people.

They're both lunatics. Who would carry around a gun if they had no intention of ever using it?

And isn't the point of concealed carry to give the sense that everyone could be armed at any time? WTF is the point of that other than to scare people? Open carry, concealed carry, there's no difference. When some idiot with a gun decides it's time to let her rip, we're all dead.

Look this would be a public service, you could wear a uniform like a cop or a soldier or maybe you can get Curtis Sliwa to design you a special beret!

...and are simply exercising their second amendment rights.

If they are not wearing an American flag lapel pin, they are either Al Quaeda operatives, liberals, or homosexuals and should be turned over to the appropriate authorities.

They know that they are intimidating others, but that is the point. Almost ALL of the very vocal minority Second Amendment absolutists (read: gun nuts and crazies) have an in-your-face attitude about their precious guns: "I have a gun and you can't do a fucking thing about it, so fuck you!"

You can see this, and similar statements all over the Internet, but it's beginning to backfire on these idiots. The American public is getting extremely tired of seeing and hearing about fucking guns everywhere, everyday. Gun nut extremists are fast becoming more despised than racists and bigots, although many of them are both.

Support a gun control organization of your choice today, and help to put an end to this madness, and the gun violence epidemic in our nation.

These guys are just the 21st century equivalent of the old stereotypical flasher hanging around elementary schools and bus stops.

Nowadays, instead of calling the cops upon sight, the appropriate response would seem to be to aim a camera at them. No, that sounds dangerous -- I meant, "leave immediately, unless you have a death wish."

I said OMG, then are we all in danger here? should we evacuate?"he said what are you talking about, I said "well you look like a nice man I figure there must be some reason you are armed at a horse show?"He gave me a brief history of his 2nd amendment rights,he was quite defensive, I just said, well I thought there must be some dire situation that required having a gun handy.

Let them try that crap in Harlem, Detroit, or South Central L.A.

Then they will find that suddenly they'll have to use those guns. If they brazenly walk around "strapped to the gills", better be prepared to use it.

Oh wait, you mean those guns are just for show?

Let's have armed young black men stroll by, sipping coffee and pushing baby carriages. Let armed open carrying Hispanic men stroll through their neighborhoods walking dogs. Also let them be carrying pooper scoopers and bags to clean up what Fido leaves.

If they are given any shit let them say. "Open Carry is for everyone! If you can, we can!"

See how fast the Open Carry Movement dies.
