Officers were notified after a 3-year-old girl was rushed to the hospital around 7:30 p.m. Monday with bruising to her body, and swelling in her brain. The girl was admitted to the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit under police protective custody. The girl, identified as Emma, died from her injuries Wednesday night.

Police said the toddler was hurt at an apartment complex near MacArthur and Hydraulic.

The case is being investigated by the Wichita Police homicide department.

The girl's 23-year-old mother and a 24-year-old man were taken into custody. A check of court records show both remain in jail on child abuse, aggravated child endangerment, and first-degree murder.

According to the Children's Alliance of Kansas, around 1400 children suffer from abuse or neglect each year. Children under the age of four are the ones most likely to die from that abuse.
