there are usually a lot of them around the the yard here in NC. I have only seen one squirrel. It's strange. I looked on the Internet but can't find anything on this.

A few weeks ago I saw a fox trotting through the back yards.. And we are as suburban as they come.
I think that the harsh winter depleted many food supplies and brought predators closer.
