Sen. King: Release Bergdahl video to public

http://thehill.com/policy/defense/208332-sen-king-make-bergdahl-video-public

Sen. Angus King (I-Maine) on Thursday called on the administration to publicly release a short video showing the deteriorating condition of Army Sgt. Bowe Bergdahl recorded by the Taliban.

King said a "dead silence" came over a briefing for senators Wednesday night when they were shown the short clip of the soldier who was released recently after five years in captivity.

"He looked terrible," King said on CNN's "New Day." "And I think that video should be released at some point. He could barely talk. He couldn't focus his eyes. He was downcast. He was thin ... I looked around the room as that video was shown, and I think it was clearly effective."

The Obama administration briefed members of the Senate on Wednesday night on the exchange of five Taliban prisoners held at Guantánamo Bay for the release of the U.S. soldier. The video was apparently shown to prove the Bergdahl’s diminishing health required the president to act quickly.

1. Two theories: The Taliban/Haqqanis were deliberately starving

Bergdahl in order to force the deal (they wanted some value out of him after 5 years) or Bergdahl himself wasn't willing or able to eat, or was otherwise ill, and they again had to get some value out of him after carting him around Pakistan for five years. Either way, it had to be done, soon.

release the information of his deteriorating health and see if the rabid dogs scamper back to their kennels or get even more rabid.

debated in public, it should be left to experts (not those in Congress who do video tape medical evaluations as with Terri Schiavo.) And to have that tape all over TV would be disgusting - I'm sure we can all anticipate the reactions from both sides. He is alive and has a right to privacy.

And, IMO, his health in that tape is irrelevant. Even if he was perfectly healthy, was being held in a palace with AC, fed three nutritious meals a day and had access to a gym, we still should have taken the swap deal immediately. There was NO GUARANTEE that the Taliban would keep their word 30 days later. I seriously doubt they give a damn about US Congressional protocol.

Though, I will admit, and I feel awful about this, if it would make the conservatives regret what they have done, I would say do it. I know in my heart that releasing the video will do nothing, though. The one that was released by the Taliban yesterday, the rightwing say that he looked great...I do not think that word means what they think it means.

6. 4 days since he's been recovered and he's still too unstable for his parents to visit in Germany

I really hope he doesn't have something worse than simple mal-nutrition and bad treatment... like cancer or something.

I truly hope the doctors can re-habilitate him and he can tell his side of the story. I wonder what would happen if he dies before he's lucid enough to go into detail.

(((vibes))) for his recovery...
