A friend of mine graduated from college a couple of years ago. She worked hard as a single mother in her 40s to finish her degree. The only way she could make it was to take out student loans. She is trying now to get her own business started, but so far it's only in the setup stage and for the moment at least she's always broke. Meanwhile, the collectors are constantly hounding her about her unpaid loans. I see ads on TV all the time for one company or another offering their services to help former students get the collectors off their backs. I imagine some are legitimate while others probably are not.
If you know of and/or have experience with any such companies that genuinely are legitimate and provide their clients with a good service to end the hounding and threats of the collectors, please respond to this post with that info or, if you like, PM me with same. I'm worried about my desperate friend and would like to help her with the name of a company or companies that provide a good service to people in this unfortunate situation. I'd pay the debt for her if I could, but I'm almost as broke as she is.
Thanks in advance.

(63,221 posts)I am so screwed. I have to pay an enormous portion of my income and I am not even making a dent in it. The interest alone is just killing me. I will never be able to retire or have financial security as long as I live - and that is IF I remain employed. If not, I am toast.

(14,881 posts)That's what I'm in, or I would have lost everything. It may still depend on when the debt was taken on (although the last I read, Pres Obama was changing the terms so that all student loans could qualify for one of the repayment programs).

(4,026 posts)Of course it only makes sense that it should, but in spite of everything President O has tried to do, too often that which makes sense doesn't carry a lot of weight. Thank you for this heads up!

(2,379 posts)I checked in to their debt counseling and consolidation programs when my house went into foreclosure. I found a link to them through the whitehouse.gov website.
They're legit and nonprofit.
