The Rude Pundit - In Brief: Time Magazine Really Shouldn't Go Down This Road

That's really a question, Time (motto: "Instant Nostalgia&quot ? Was Bowe Bergdahl worthy of being swapped for five Taliban detainees? Or maybe was it "worth it" to make a deal to get an American soldier home? And it's a question that lots and lots of people are asking, since, in the worst case, six other soldiers died on patrols that included looking for Bowe Bergdahl. But if we're gonna go down the big ol' "what if" highway, if we're gonna ask if something that's already done was worth the cost of doing it, well, shit, if we're gonna play, let's play:

Was the Afghanistan War worth the loss of 2300 Americans, countless wounded, thousand of dead Afghanis, and hundreds of billions of dollars?

Was the creation of the detention center at Guantanamo Bay worth the number of people who may have died because terrorists used Gitmo as a recruiting tool?

Was it worth arming the Mujahideen back in the late 1970s and early 1980s so that their existence could lead to the formation of the Taliban (which was both part of and a reaction to the Mujahideen)?

Was it worth electing Ronald Reagan and Jimmy Carter, both of whom supported the Mujahideen?

See, when you get into fucked-up existential questions like who is worth what, you can't act like that worth is to be judged in a vacuum. Bowe Bergdahl's captivity was the result of decades of bullshit American foreign policy. (Hell, if you want, you could go back to British imperialism in the land that would become Afghanistan.)

Yeah, great, Time, let's put a price on a human life, by all means. Let's talk about "greater good" and utilitarian approaches to war. Or maybe we could acknowledge that such ideas are worthless when your are talking about a worthless venture in this worthless time.

What happened to innocent until proven guilty?

This 100% faux generated outrage about Bergdahl and it is coming to us
just like the "Swift Boats for Truth" did about John Kerry in 2004.

If w had acted on the 8/6/2001 PDB we wouldn't had to be in Afghanistan or
if Don Rummy hadn't stopped our troops in Dec. 2001 from getting bin Laden
@ Tora Bora we would have been out of that crap hole years ago.

the right wing echo chamber attacked a POW without having facts to support its assertions. Pox News and hate radio are the face and voice of the Republican Party. It's unfortunate that a reactionary propaganda operation holds so much sway over a major political party to the point of transforming that Party into a cartoon character death cult that devours itself as it attempts to drag good people into their cesspool.

The families of all the servicepeople overseas would all say YES if it were their family member instead of this young man. If I had any young people in my family of an age to "serve" I would discourage them, it just is not worth it to fight for this country as it stands today. Not because of President Obama, but the useless politicians who have sat on their lazy asses for 6 years now, blocking anything that could have helped the citizens. Shootings on a daily basis, it is not safe to go anywhere these days, gun freaks are running wild. Everything the President does is met with "Impeach" Disgusting. It has not changed since the early days. The gop is for the wealthy (tax breaks) the democratic party is for the workers. On Sunday the gop propoganda shows will have McCain and Graham on, calling for impeachment of the President, and further dragging the USA into a cesspool.

It was bad enough that they had special "fluff" covers made for USA consumption only.

Now one has to seriously consider whether one should waste any time or money on the magazine, unless stuck in a dentist's office....

So now the seed is planted that Time magazine and the Republican party/FOX News believes we should leave *some* troops behind. Imagine if you were a captured troop - would you cling to the hope that your country was fighting to bring you home or wonder if TIME magazine, John McCain and Joe Scarborough will be screaming for you to be left behind. What a nast, disturbing precedent to start. Who needs enemies to wage a psych war on our troops when we have the TIME Magazine and Republican party to do it for us?

41. Time magazine is a propaganda rag for Corporate America
Sat Jun 7, 2014, 01:14 AM

News magazines like 'Mother Jones' and 'The Progressive' do not accept corporate advertising. I made that observation many years ago on my journey to becoming a progressive, a socialist and a leftist. Anyone who still reads Time, Newsweek and the other corporate controlled magazines are ignorant rubes incapable of critical thinking.
