I can only imagine how she felt the first time she had trash can punch. I bet she wouldn't able to do that interview the next day.

(27,275 posts)I would never take a medication without knowing the proper dosage, so I always ask. What she did was foolish and irresponsible. Ingredients, including dosage information, are usually on the label...at least in California. Still...a newbie downing an entire cookie is just as dumb as a person who does not drink downing a fifth of vodka. Not smart.

16 times the recommended dosage in to a clean and inexperienced vessel. Hoo boy.
I had a friend who is relatively seasoned in the ways of the world, eat a brownie, from her son. Her experience was too strong as well. She was miserable all night. Her husband offered to massage her back to sooth her. She told him she didn't want him to touch her. Who turns down a back rub? Yep, a person can just get too high.
(Glad you did not stay away for ever, Trumad, even if we have had some philosophical differences)

(13,133 posts)It's called adverse reaction warning. We should send her thank you letters for helping to prove that Pot doesn't cause death or dying.
For those among us who have had similar reactions and or cannot handle or deal with such, often find that to merely to stay away as the appropriate response. My experience with any type of dosage of pot over forty years ago made me know it know it wasn't for me. At the time it seemed everybody i knew below the age of thirty was into it. After all these years i am glad it happened that way and i wasn't able to follow the crowd.
If you are looking for new kind or better kind of high, you are probably not going to find it flushing your brain with strange chemicals. But i would never be the hypocrite to say you shouldn't try if you felt the need. Just remember, read the fine print
On edit: After reading her actual column she does blame her problem on the fine print and probably because she cannot take personal responsibility and blame herself for her own stupidity. But obviously she is quite interested in following the crowd otherwise why would she not have done it in the first place

(13,133 posts)It could be for any number of reasons and she might have a very low threshold on other things. Everybody's body is different, if even just slightly. My body is, or least my mind is wired up to make it that way. I was always treated as kind of different kid when young and never knew why. After many years is missed diagnoses and fifty years, my autistic / Asperger's characteristics were pinpointed. With this type of issue, peoples neurons get over populated during inception inside the womb. Small things that most people can handle might just be a tipping point for an autistic person. Sometimes an autistic person or a person that leans that way can get overstimulated very easily.
I can identify with the symptoms because i have been there. Its not really a good feeling but more of an feeling of being out of control. This especially true with the concerns of those cognitive functions (which pot effects to a large degree) where the puzzle that is reality has to be put together in a second or two. Its a feeling of being overwhelmed by incoming stimulus and your mind is failing to interpret it correctly on most levels.
Not that i am saying i sympathize with her, but more seeing where she was and how her stupidity put her there. She was in very little danger from the drugs and also she doesn't understand that she is trying blame the rest of world for her stupidity.

(13,133 posts)My brother was a stoner for a good part of his life and i can see that has gave him a moderate amount of cognitive dysfunction and that mostly he will never recover from. Maybe some other stoners might have better luck with the long term effects of chronic abuse of pot, but i wouldn't hold my breath waiting for it

(3,724 posts)I cannot stand the woman, but she's not a complete imbecile. I simply don't believe that she asked NO ONE for advice, safe dosage, etc. I think she may have taken a bit of it, or maybe none at all, and just wrote a bullshit story about what she believes an overdose would be like. It wouldn't surprise me if it wasn't just an excuse to demonize legal MJ.

(9,878 posts)aside, it doesn't help the cause much to sell 16 doses in what is commonly considered a one dose form with no labelling to that effect. A candy bar is culturally a one dose item. It's like selling a can of beer with 16x concentrated beer in it and then expecting the person to ask, Gee, is it OK to drink the whole can just like every other can of beer in the history of the world, or should I drink a fraction of it in case this particular beer happens to be super concentrated?
I mean, yeah, I think under an abundance of caution I would have asked how much pot candy bar I should eat. But still. Back in the day you had to eat WAY more cannabis than you had to smoke to get the same effect. Some of us haven't been in the same room with pot in decades, have never been in the same state with legal pot, and aren't quite hip to the ins and outs of pot gummy bears.
Sixteen dose candy bars just make the whole enterprise look bad.

(18,186 posts)and she did interview people at the dispensary who explained that people each have different reactions. She chose to ignore everything she was told and down the whole thing.
And then blame everyone else because that didn't work out.
She is like the teenager who tries liquor for the first time and drinks 15 cups of hunch punch. Stupid. Impulsive. Immature.
But most teenagers don't write columns blaming the alcohol distilleries for their bad choices.
Also, she might have gotten alcohol poisoning from ingesting 16 times her limit for alcohol. She might have died from an overdose if she'd ingested 16 times the dosage for Oxycontin.
As it is, she had a rough time but lived to tell the tale of her lack of restraint.
Get the facts before blaming the dispensary.
I would not want to sound as stupid as Dowd does, personally. The only people who are buying her story are people with an agenda.

(27,275 posts)And now she is whining about HER mistake. Her mistake is a common one. People expect an immediate effect, then take more when they do not feel anything. Then, because they took to much and did not wait, they get too high. I have zero sympathy for Dowd. As a "journalist," she should have done some research.

(34,825 posts)Edibles don't have much of an effect on me, so I decided to try a brownie with a gram of bubble hash baked in. The tender admonished me several times to eat just a quarter of the brownie. I'm thinking yeah yeah just ring it up, dood. They don't just sell you this stuff and send you on your merry way. In any case, I ingested half the brownie, and after about 30 minutes felt a warm, calming sensation wash over my body from the top down. No freakout, just sat home and watched the teevee.
