from buzzfeed . . . I don't know how much credence this all has, but it is certainly entertaining.
1. First thing Obama did was stare Putin down with a discerning nod.
2. Then Obama turned away because he was over it.
3. Then, realizing he was taller, Obama smirked and looked down on Putin.
4. Then Putin was like O RLY?
5. And the global frenemy stare-down got awkward

(18,402 posts)Put two separate, unrelated images together on a split screen (or sutured together, in sequence, in a movie) and you create the effect that there is a relationship between the two, when of course there really isn't.
We do have the Russians to thank for this time-honored cinematic technique!

(59,498 posts)It is interesting how easy it would be to use it in clearly deceptive ways. I would love to have a same time (if it really was the same time) wide screen angle where you really see both.

There was even another frosty meeting between the two earlier . . .

(18,402 posts)you'll note Christiane Amanpour suprised at the split screen feed from French television, and suggesting (as the crowd laughs at the effect) that the conjunction is not necessarily reflective of the situation on the ground.
She's discussing what a rousing reception Obama has gotten everywhere he has appeared on this occasion, while Putin has been received coldly by the crowds. Then suddenly, she says:
Oh, there they are together! Are they?
The anchorwoman responds: No, that's a split screen, Christiane.
Amanpour: But they've made it ...
Anchorwoman: ... I know! But everybody here is reacting!
If you look at the video, Obama doesn't appear to be anywhere within eyesight of Putin.
I wasn't trying to rain on anyone's parade. And it wasn't my opinion. It's what it is.

(43,155 posts)....apparently the split screen feed was broadcast on video monitors to the crowd, and there was a crowd reaction as well as a reaction by both Obama and Putin. So believe it or not, the awkward reactions of the two were probably real. Sort of like if you've ever gone to a ballgame and suddenly see yourself broadcast up on the Jumbotron.
Whoever was the official video feed operator was quite the sly one.

(9,224 posts)that 4:42 CNN clip on the bottom really made me happy and proud and cry all at the same time. That music they play when he walks in accompanied by the children just started it all for me... and the cheering, and Christiane Amanpour's commentary was excellent. She had to impress upon the other CNN woman (don't know who it was) that this really *was* a big deal, and that Obama really *is* being welcomed warmly. The other woman was minimizing it.
