I have not served. I was almost at draft-able age when the draft ended with the close of the Vietnam War. I would likely have qualified for an educational deferment had it come to that. But I most likely would have gone to Canada. I saw no point in the war. America's national interests were not at stake other than our global stare down with the Soviet Union and the war was tearing families and the nation apart.
But I have nothing but respect for those who either enlisted or were drafted and fought and died in Vietnam (as with all other wars). They were but pawns in a big global chess game.
But when Cheney and Rumsfeld and Wolfowitz, the Fake News talking heads etc. come out and attack a man who did serve I grow angry.
We don't know the facts of his service. Let's leave it at that. We should be quietly celebrating his safe return and then let the chips where they may.
He may be guilty of desertion. If so he will pay the price. Did he come a Muslim? We don't know and quite honestly unless he became radicalized the very talking heads on Fake News should respect his "religious freedom" to make that choice.
But to try him in the court of public opinion when he is just recovering and adjusting to life in the West is criminal.
