Bergdahls Dad: Drone Killed Captors Kid
In June 2010, Robert Bergdahl, the father of released American POW Bowe Bergdahl, gave a speech at an Idaho Republican Party fundraiser. In one of his first public appearances during his son's five-year captivity, he asked the conservative audience to show compassion for his son's captorsand, in a twist that foretold the plot of Homelandhe alleged that the United States had killed one of those captor's children with a drone strike.

The Idaho fundraiser was an election year event, and the day's other speakersIdaho Senator Jim Risch, then-national-party-chairman Michael Steele, radio host Dennis Prager, and a belligerent stand-up comic named Eric Golubtook the usual shots at President Obama and rallied partisans to donate money to November's cause. [I covered the event as a reporter for AOL News.]

"I grew up in a conservative family in Los Angeles," he said with a smile. "My father was for Goldwater. He wore a Nixon button in our liberal Jewish neighborhood. I was the lone U.C. Santa Barbara surfer who voted for Ronald Reagan." Many in the audience nodded in approval, and then Bergdahl talked about the work of retrieving his son.

"We are with Bowe," Steele said. "We appreciate the sacrifice of the mother and the father watching their son go off to war. We appreciate it," he said. "But I don't believe this administration, or those of its ilk, appreciate the sacrifice."

(17,537 posts)Have you seen the slimefest? How could you have missed it?
I'll admit, when I first saw the guy, his appearance to me evoked the Duck Dynasty guy (who I find repulsive, by the way) and I kind of assumed he was republican, but I was glad his kid was coming home anyway. It didn't really matter to me. I appreciated that he and his wife seemed gracious and intelligent about the whole situation.
Then I saw the slimefest against this guy by the reich-wing and their minions on social media, including several of them hurling the "liberal" (or "librul" epithet, or "he's a demoncrat, what do you expect" kind of nonsense.
So, hmm. Turns out he is a republican after all? Yes that is interesting and one more way the nutjobs have stepped in it over this whole affair.
But relevance to the son's rescue? Not really. I didn't think the op was about the son's rescue though.

(295,899 posts)his republican buddies now? Where's fucking Michael Steele now?
"We are with Bowe," Steele said. "We appreciate the sacrifice of the mother and the father watching their son go off to war. We appreciate it," he said. "But I don't believe this administration, or those of its ilk, appreciate the sacrifice."
thanks alsame.. funny how things CHANGE.

(4,713 posts)BERGDAHLS DAD: DRONE KILLED CAPTORS KID is the actual title, but hey I guess this is relevant to his kid who is actually the one who matters here.
So I wonder if the right we are going to change their hate fest for this man like Bill O'Reilly and Hannity calling this Republican father a terrorist.

(34,648 posts)They threw his son under the bus without a second thought. Many exrepublicans i know are independent now because of the tea party type hysteria and they are just not with that. And they whisper to me that they are not racists and they believe in science and feeding kids. The r party has gone off the deep end and lots of folks are just not up for a swim.

(34,825 posts)live in Idaho, home schooled the kid, huge following by the extreme right. but none of that made a wit of difference. the kid was captured in the line of duty, and the only reasonable recourse was to get him back.

(80 posts)A bandana and a duck call and you would have a certified reich-wing asshole. Guess this proves to the world that when Dildo Riley and Hans Shammity say that someone "looks" like a muslim, they really mean that they are reich-wing assholes. I just can't keep up with all of the new reich-wing code words these days.

What would be sad is if he agreed with them and shaved his beard to be all white bread as possible and condemned his own son.
That kind of crap has happened.

(34,857 posts)Because I think it shows that President Obama isn't the ideologue the right makes him out to be - he'll stand up for every American, regardless of party affiliation. But my guess is his family quickly changes their party affiliation with how the right has treated 'em.

Oh well, the Berdahls do live in Idaho and homeschooled their son, and as Ron Paul supporters they probably didn't agree with the wars much anyway. And shave the duck dynasty beard already, the dude was released.
