No End Game: How the Treatment of Bowe Bergdahl Will Destroy the Republican Party

We are looking at an unprecedented time in our nation’s history.

With any nation that has a two-party system of government, it is inevitable that the party out of power will feel some kind of animosity toward the party in power. In fact, it is natural. As the party not in power, it is your goal to convince your nation that the party in power is somehow and some way being detrimental to the country through their policy decisions. These decisions could be related to a nation’s safety and security, a nation’s economy, a nation’s immigration system, and a nation’s social issues just to name a few. As a new round of national elections approaches, it is the goal of the party not in power to convince the population at large that they can do better than the current political party in power.

For the Republican Party in the year 2014, they have taken this idea to levels not seen before at any time in American history.

From your link, doxydad.. thank you.

"To attack a military POW and his family is the new low for the Republican Party and it could very well be the straw that breaks the camel’s back.

Americans today are becoming more and more put off by the Republican Party. They did not agree with their decision to shut down the government in October of 2013. They do not agree with the Republican Party’s stance on gay marriage. They believe climate change is an issue worth addressing. They believe in a woman’s right to choose. They believe that income inequality is an issue that needs to be addressed. They believe in raising the minimum wage. They believe in common sense gun control legislation."

But, end of the day it does not matter what people think about gay marriage, gun control, ect.

They simply do not pay enough attention to sort out who says what in politics and operate at the base level that there is an evil liberal boogyman and republicans are flag waving patriots ...

The majority of people in my age group around me - 30 to 45ish parents, they have no time for bashing gays, see the need for reasonable gun control, don't feel strong about abortion or are women who support women's right ... Basically are not aligned wit the republicans on ANY social issue.

BUT, more of them than not vote R cause of the big spending liberal and or the PC liberal ...

We have LOST GROUND over the last 6 years when there was NO reason what so ever to give republicans any control or say.

This country is too fat and affluent to gin up the focus and attention needed to really care about who says what and who does what in DC or state capitals ...

The only thing i would add is that they usually throw in some form of "both sides are bad".

I find these people more maddening than the true right wing. At least they believe something.

Punditry posing as press is killing this Country. Partly because it fires up the base but mostly because it muddies the water for all of sheep in the middle.

2010 was the seminal moment for me.

There was no reason, NONE to give the GOP any power, and they had one of the biggest congressional wins in modern history and as usual scored majorities in most states just in time for redistricting.

That was a real wake up call to me.

What I see ... They were raging assholes in the 90s to Clinton, and have actually gotten WORSE, they don't even make the flag waving constitutional pretense anymore. They just scream bloody murder, even if it is the complete opposite position they had the day before and this country simply either gets worn out and tunes out or falls for their bullshit.

They are NOT going away ... and we are too fat (figuratively in this context) and complacent as a people to care.

The GOP is self destructing on a daily basis. On one hand, I feel so sorry for all the people that are affected by their decision making. Not expanding medicaid is a perfect example. On the other hand, it is telling people what these assholes really stand for. And it's not you and me. We are probably past the point where they can recover and win any type of election in the future. The real issue, especially in 2014, it to get out and vote. 2016 will fall right in line then. Let us never put these assholes in power again.

Until the Democrats put as much effort as the Republicans do into developing talent and promoting candidates for the town, city and state positions, we will always have an up hill battle. We tend to win some wars, like Roe v Wade, but conservative local and state government then enact their own laws to effectively override the national gains the left accomplished.

Turning states blue starts at the local level. If we can't GOTV for those elections, I don't see the demise of the Republican Party in my lifetime.

I'd love to see a comprehensive "reminder" list that outline the direct and intentional harm the GOP has caused our country for corporate interests........

Americans will tolerate a lot of nonsense, but once an individual issue or person is attacked who is removed from politics, the backlash is enormous.

Another case in point - Rush Limbaugh got away spouting his crap for years, but once he made a personal and unwarranted attack on Sandra Fluke his support and influence dramatically eroded.

As a country, we allow politicians and pundits to attack their opponents. But we do not let them attack the innocent.

The backlash they will face over this will be enormous and long lasting.

After that the principle was that we drop our oppositions and E Pluribus Unum for the term.

Now it's election time 24/7 because they made a commercial business out of it and thousands of douchebags make big money sucking off it.

I don't see any end to that, thanks to the Supreme Court.

but I doubt it. Just as they changed their minds one way, they can change it back again. They will lie and gaslight and obfuscate about every thing they've ever said. We have always been at war with Eurasia. And everyone else will fall in line. The Republican party will never be destroyed, because of the very nature of their base.

The Bergdahl mess is very unlikely to "destroy" the Republican Party, and this is not the first time a Republican has smeared a soldier for political gain.

This essay is, primarily, wishful thinking.

As a matter of fact, much of that entire site sounds really naïve and not very politically astute.

The NC GOP is alive and well. And if the Democratic Party doesn't get it together, allow me to introduce the Republican who could very well win Senator Kay Hagan's seat:

Thom Tillis

Don't say you weren't warned, DU.
