Jindal Signs Bill Blocking Lawsuits Against Oil and Gas Companies

The Louisiana governor might have also effectively undercut ongoing claims against BP for the 2010 Gulf oil spill.

Rejecting the advice of his own attorney general and dozens of legal scholars, Louisiana governor and potential presidential contender Bobby Jindal effectively blocked a New Orleans-area levee board from suing oil and gas companies for allegedly destroying the state’s coasts – and in so doing, may have also derailed state and local claims against BP for damages and tax revenue lost following the 2010 Deepwater Horizon oil spill.

The law, SB 469, essentially bars a levee district in New Orleans’ East Bank – the Southeast Louisiana Flood Protection Authority-East, or SLFPA-E – from pressing forward in its lawsuit against 97 oil and gas companies, which it blames for exposing New Orleans to catastrophic damage from hurricanes Rita and Katrina by cutting thousands of miles of pipes and canals through sensitive barrier islands and wetlands that otherwise would have protected the coastal city.

The lawsuit, filed last summer, sought to force energy companies to restore the wetlands, fill in the canals, and pay for past damages.

Man you should meet the voters. Remember this is where David Duke lived and ran for governor. What I can't figure out is how he keeps from getting impeached. This man will do anything if he thinks it will get him closer to making a run for President. He presents himself as the governor for the people and yet he refused Federal funding for both Medicaid and education. For the good of the people of course.

At least in Louisiana, both sides are pretty much identical.

For example, the awful abortion law that went through the legislature came from Democrat Katrina Jackson. The bill was written by the Louisiana Family Forum which is about what you expect from an organization with 'family' in the name.

Democratic legislators are in large part watercarriers for the oil & gas industry as well.

And Mitch Landrieu, who has made noises about running for governor, is busy gentrifying New Orleans.

Louisiana isn't hopeless, but there is a lot of work to be done. The Democrats really need to get their shit together in this state because it is winnable. You can't win when your organization seems to be terribly disorganized.

In large part, IMHO, Republicans are successful in Louisiana currently because they organize well.

How does this action by the public servant governor serve the public interest in any way, shape or form?

Oh, that's right. IT DOESN'T. In any way shape or form.

These Oligarch's and the politicians they have purchased act with impunity and why not? They seem to be able to get away with the most craven base acts of Corporate Servitude.

in unlimited and undisclosable amounts IS corruption!

A large unmarked vanilla envelope was dropped off at Jindal's mansion no doubt, with a promise of many more sent to Secret Super PACS of corruption and bribery.

The more money allowed in politics the more the monied classes, billionaires and corporations, gets to control politics. The very definition of fascism that the constitution was so clearly and carefully written to prevent.

Duh.

BOOBY, as he is known to his friends, his critics and most thinking people
is on a difficult quest for the GOP presidential nomination.

I hope he gets it. The presidential debates will then be a raucous affair.

Maybe even surpassing the inane humor and bizarre logic of Steven Colbert.

Can we expect now that every time a large right-wing donor is subject to a lawsuit that the governor of that state can just pass a law making it illegal to sue that entity? Jindal has just removed the courts from the 3-branch of government system.

It isn't just the Governor there is a great Left winging Senator Landrieu in here too. Her latest local TV add features her and her dear old dad "Moon." They are telling the population how XL Pipeline will be good for them and provide lots of jobs. I don't know how these jobs are going to happen as the pipeline never enters LA and ends in TX.

Just how stupid are people?

Here's more information for anyone interested:http://cenlamar.com/2014/06/06/if-you-care-about-louisiana-this-should-make-you-livid/

What isn't mentioned in the article is that Jindal's brother, Nikesh, is a lawyer for Gibson Dunn. The law firm representing BP.

Meanwhile St. Tammany parish is currently up in arms over a proposed fracking drill. It will be interesting to see what pans out when a Republican stronghold goes against the oil & gas industry. The local politicos are already scurrying for cover.

Not to mention that Jindal is in office for a few more hurricane seasons.

For Louisiana politics at least, things should start getting interesting. It's a shame for the people that have lost/will lose however.
