PARIS (AP) In her new book, former Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton says she pushed President Barack Obama to lift or ease the decades-long U.S. embargo on Cuba because it was no longer useful to American interests or promoting change on the communist island.
In excerpts of the book "Hard Choices" obtained by The Associated Press ahead of its release next week, Clinton writes that the embargo has given communist leaders Fidel and Raul Castro an excuse not to enact democratic reforms. And she says opposition from some in Congress to normalizing relations "to keep Cuba in a deep freeze" has hurt both the United States and the Cuban people. She says the 2009 arrest by Cuba of USAID contractor Alan Gross and Havana's refusal to release him on humanitarian grounds is a "tragedy" for improving ties.
"Since 1960, the United States had maintained an embargo against the island in hopes of squeezing Castro from power, but it only succeeded in giving him a foil to blame for Cuba's economic woes," she writes. She says her husband, former President Bill Clinton, tried to improve relations with Cuba in the 1990s, but the Castro government did not respond to the easing in some sanctions. Nonetheless, Obama was determined to continue the effort, she writes.

Interesting, I didn't know that she had proposed lifting the embargo.

I gather it's easier to continue the bashing 24/7.
Carry on...........

(62,269 posts)Congress has tied the presidents hands but it sounds like Clinton believes a work around is possible. Going to be good to see what she comes up with.

(30,247 posts)If we lose the Senate, it's going to be very hard for the next Democratic president. The thought of also losing the WH in 2016 is something I won't even want to imagine, so I'm assuming that a Democrat will win in 2016.

(62,269 posts)I'm betting that she thinks he could have generalized the humanitarian pass even more so that anyone could get it. Basically take it further, let the courts complain.

(9,893 posts)I've never been a Clinton (bill or hill) uber, but Hillary's position here is certainly realistic and commendable. This may be a good time to make overtures to Cuba, since it seems Raul Castro may be a bit more flexible now than his brother may have been in the past. Of course, Putin seems to be looking to bolster relationships that might annoy the US.

(30,247 posts)In the past it may not have been the proper time to lift the embargo, but it doesn't serve any purpose at this point in time. It only hurts the average Cuban and not the government. The problem will be the response from conservative Cubans in the US and the RW. There'll be a backlash.

(9,893 posts)I have read that the younger Cubans are less interested in punishing Castro and are more inclined to looks seriously at the Dem candidate. As to the RW, they'll just add "Cuba" to their incessant screams of "Benghazi." I'm not sure that "Cuba" adds much to their hysteria.

(30,247 posts)To the T.P. folks, she and Obama are Marxists. They can't win with that crowd.
It's also true about younger Cubans, they are not as interested in the embargo and Castro as their parents and grandparents. It used to be that when I went to FL to see my mother, if there were was a gathering of more than 3 Cubans, the conversation inevitably turned to Castro. It's not like that anymore.

And as you know, Florida has beacoup electoral college votes, and a bunch of Congressional districts.
And the pukes just keep putting up unpalatable candidates like RMoney.
