PA school aide fed pet treats to 4th grade students, called them ‘cookies’

PHILADELPHIA (Reuters) – An aide at a rural Pennsylvania school handed out pet treats to dozens of fourth-grade students and may have told them the food was cookies or crackers, according to local media reports.

It was unclear how many children ate the pet treats, but the part-time worker at Upper Frederick elementary school in New Hanover gave them to about 75 students on Thursday, Richard Faidley, the Boyerton Area School District superintendent, said in a statement seen by Reuters.

It was unclear what might have motivated the aide to hand out the pet treats to students. The worker at the school, which is about 30 miles (48 km) northwest of Philadelphia, has been placed on leave pending the results of an investigation, the statement said.

“The treats may have been misrepresented as cookies or crackers,” Faidley said in the statement released on Friday.

Faidley could not be reached for comment on Saturday.

“Our research on the product indicates that the treat ingredients would not be harmful to people, with the exception for those individuals with specific food allergies,” Faidley’s statement said.

One student at the school, Gabriel Moore, told local television station WFMZ that he ate three of the treats.

“She made it look like it was a joke that they were dog treats and then she came around and said, ‘No they are cookies. They are fine,’” Gabriel told the station.

I used to work for Hartz Mountain and one of the scientists
came around one day handing out "cookies". They were
dog treats and they tasted just like animal crackers.

my Grandmother once bought one of my cousins a snack treat she found in the store. They where called People Crackers, not knowing what they really where(1970's probably about the time they first came out).

in processing and packaging human foods.

I once worked at the pet foor manufacturing arm of Quaker Oats (as a Manpower temp). The processing of pet foods was quite careful.

On edit: I bet a lot of people here either ate Milkbones or other such pet treats or had siblings or cousins who did.

I knew that one of my cousins would sneak small Milkbones when her mother wasn't looking.

(Milkbones are made here, I believe.)

Some food companies, like Quaker Oats, have subsidiaries that make pet foods and treats.

Only the original milk bones are made here, the rest, China. If you go through the dog food aisle, you will see distributed by, And a few marked Made in USA. If they don't say it,it means they are not made here, it is a selling point now, so if they could they would. Milk bones says the original are made here, but they don't mark it because they could only put it on one type only.
I know, I check. I have called numbers when they say any questions, they can never say outright they are made here, so they are not. I am trying to embarrass them to move back, but right now I would give a lot if they would mark Human food that way,I know that my medications are made in China and Vietnam. They won't tell you, but you can find that information when you query them individually.

Neighbor lady paid us to walk her dog and we swiped a few of his treats. Not bad, kind of tasteless.
