Because I Say So: EU Commissioner Defends Controversial TTIP

The Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership (TTIP) will "change people's lives for the better", according to Karel De Gucht, the European commissioner for trade.

<snip>

Speaking at the Wroclaw Global Forum 2014 in Poland, a foreign policy conference, he denied that TTIP would lead to the removal of corporate governance and that it would "give total dominion to multinational corporations".

<snip>

"There are some who say that the European Union and the United States are prepared to give total dominion to multinational corporations through investor to state dispute settlement even when we have explained that our objective on investment is quite the opposite," De Gucht said.

He did not elaborate, however, on why this is the case, but said that instead of less regulation, TTIP will mean "stronger safeguards that will help avoid frivolous cases and ensure that we protect our right to regulate, while continuing to encourage job–creating investment".

across the pond. Concerted effort.
Support of the TPP does not get a vote from me - and anyone who says I am a one-issue voter is not paying attention to the TPP. Tentacles touching everything.

I think of the TTIP and the TPP as pretty much the same thing.

Both the left and right oppose it.

Marine Le Pen to meet other far-right leaders in move to create anti-EU bloc

France's Front National leader Marine Le Pen will meet other far-right and eurosceptic leaders on Wednesday in an attempt to create a powerful bloc in the European parliament.

Le Pen insisted the party's score was an unqualified victory despite an abstention rate of 57%. She demanded that France call a halt to talks between the European Union and the United States to create a vast free market, known as the Transatlantic Trade Treaty.

"I clearly call on the president of the Republic, firstly the dissolution of the Assemblée Nationale, because you know it is no longer at all representative of the French people," Le Pen said.

"I also demand that he does three things to take Sunday's vote into account: firstly, France halts the transatlantic treaty, secondly, France states its veto of Turkey's entry into the European Union and, thirdly, he nationalises Alstom, contrary to the rules of the European Union, to save this strategic company."
