I was trying to explain to my brother why Obamacare is a good thing,

And he gave me a look of disgust and condescension and said "Man, you actually believe all that shit, huh?"
It’s like what Mark Twain said, “Never argue with stupid people. They will drag you down to their level and then beat you with experience.”

is good, maybe you want to reexamine your basic assumptions and see if you're solving the right problem.

"OK, just rattle off a few of the complaints about Obama where you've thought something like 'c'mon, I don't like the guy either, but that's just going overboard.' As many as you can."

Odds are it'll be a short list.

I've found some form of reverse psychology works with people who are to the right of me, but not total ideologues. I try to position myself as basically and vaguely agreeing with them and I proceed to be a "concern troll" in regards to right wing positions. It seems to work better than attacking and debating them directly.

E.g.,
"Y'know, sometimes I can't tell how much is just 'rah-rah for my team, boo-hiss for the other guy', and how much is believing your own advertising."

It's frustrating because any progress seems to get washed away with another dose or two of Fox and the like, but in a lot of cases you're not going to see results immediately. All you can do is plant seeds and water them when you can.

your brother obviously has the means that the 10 or 20 thousand is nothing to him, and it could start to add up very quickly if that stay goes into days.

There is no magic when they report that one of the leading causes of bankruptcy in this country is healthcare expenses

Like , should insurance companies be able to stop your treatment for a life threatening situation if you hit a cap? Should they be able raise your rates so the CEO cabin get a big bonus? Should pre existing conditions like being ore diabetes keep you from getting insurance? Should tax payers keep funding emergency room care for uninsured?

I got a brainwashed nephew who lives in Arizona raised on limbaugh's tit by a right wing father all confused when I asked him innocent questions in a non threatening manner. I pretended I wanted him to educate me since he was so brilliant. Later on I heard from his Mother that he thought aunt kim was pretty smart but was scared to see me next time I visited there for my yearly visit. Aunt kim kind of rattled him.
