Indiana Republicans endorsed marriage "between a man and a woman" and selected Kelly Mitchell as the party's nominee for state treasurer during the Indiana Republican Convention in Fort Wayne on Saturday.
After a contentious weeklong debate, delegates from across Indiana approved the new language for the state party's platform. It says, "We believe that strong families, based on marriage between a man and a woman, are the foundation of society."
The vote was far from unanimous, but it was decisive enough that a show of hands from the nearly 1,700 GOP delegates sufficed.
... The party eliminated similar language in 2012, but social conservatives pushed this year to have it restored after failing to get a constitutional same-sex marriage ban on the November ballot earlier this year.
