From Owen Jones at the Guardian, via Daily Kos
In the latest CIA coup, America's leading spooks have sent the Twittersphere into a frenzy with their chucklesome debut on social media: "We can neither confirm nor deny that this is our first tweet." How droll! More than a quarter of a million people have retweeted what has been described as "the best first tweet possible". No wonder: it's one of the world's most secretive organisations being self-deprecating, light-hearted, even dare I say it?cute.
Here's a story that isn't quite so cute. My parents were among many South Yorkshire families who took in refugees fleeing Augusto Pinochet's Chile in the 1970s. Sylvia was a Chilean woman with two kids. Her husband had been murdered, she had been tortured and traumatised she would end her life by jumping from a Sheffield tower block.
Here was just one victim of a junta installed on 11 September 1973 with CIA support after Henry Kissinger declared: "I don't see why we need to stand by and watch a county go communist due to the irresponsibility of its people." Dissidents had electrodes attached to their genitals. Thousands were killed, including those crammed into Santiago's National Stadium; among then was Victor Jara Latin America's answer to Bob Dylan. This was the other 9/11, and the CIA's fingerprints were all over it. [...]
The CIA might try and LOL away its record, but given the world is still dealing with the consequences of its many disastrous postwar interventions, it shouldn't be allowed to get away with it. "Terrorism" is normally used when referring to acts of violence committed by non-white people hostile to the west. But if we're understanding the term to mean acts of terror committed for political ends, then the CIA is surely the greatest terrorist organisation on earth.
Fuckers.

(55,745 posts)Then there's the spymaster who did business with the Nazis before, during and after the war and dumped veep Nixon's the Bay of Pigs Thing on President Kennedy and then "served" on the Warren Commission:
JFK Conference: David Talbot named Allen Dulles as 'the Chairman of the Board of the Assassination'
Lots more example of cuteness as treason.
And of course just about the first thing they did was radicalize Islam by overthrowing the democratically-elected President Mossadegh in Iran. Did you know that Iran's constitution at that time was based on ours? That they respected us, unlike their feelings for the colonial powers?
The CIA practically invented "blowback" and the world has been suffering the consequences ever since.
Fuckers.

(9,033 posts)(except to the eternally-unprepared CIA) that the American embassy was attacked in '79 and the hostages seized. After all, the Shah was in the US, and 25 years before the CIA had plotted in the embassy basement to install him on the throne, and prevent the nationalization of Iranian oil.
But I'm sure no one could've predicted the outcome.

(50,983 posts)It became SOP, standard operating procedure. Then they lost sight of their original mission and started the junta thing in the USA in violation of everything that's holy. And our nation is in ruins.
Henry Kissinger should be in a deep dark hole.

(9,033 posts)formed in 1947, off the reservation by 1953, unaccountable and malevolent and yet bumbling. Have they ever accomplished something that was a long-term benefit for the US?
And not only have they been causing trouble since inception, they are lousy at the job they are supposed to be doing, which is keeping us informed on what our "enemies" are up to...being unable to see the coming collapse of the USSR was pathetic to the point of being surreal.

I never had any thought that when I set up the CIA that it would be injected into peacetime cloak and dagger operations. Some of the complications and embarrassment I think we have experienced are in part attributable to the fact that this quiet intelligence arm of the President has been so removed from its intended role that it is being interpreted as a symbol of sinister and mysterious foreign intrigue-and a subject for cold war enemy propaganda.
With all the nonsense put out by Communist propaganda ... the last thing we needed was for the CIA to be seized upon as something akin to a subverting influence in the affairs of other people. ...

(50,983 posts)the advocates of an ever expanding military did not want told. What was the justification for massive military spending if the Soviet Union was weakening? We see some of the same obfuscation today in the terrorism threat.

(50,983 posts)We would be drinking beer (outside) in the 1980s and raising hell about politics. My repeated personal point of emphasis was that the Republicans, but both parties, were overstating the Soviet threat as an excuse for massive military spending.
If I could see that with zero intelligence at my disposal there is no way Saint Ronnie and the rest were not faking it.
And now they are so worried about having a viable enemy that we are engaged in creating one out of thin air by sending killer drones into sovereign nations. This is unprecedented in all of human history. We are sending explosive laden aircraft into countries that are not at war with the US. This is an act of war in itself. Someone is growing very wealthy from building this hardware.
