I think the word "old," especially applying to everyone in the boomer generation,

grates on a lot of ears. The word "older" would't be as irritating, since age is a relative concept.

But most people in their fifties and even sixties don't consider themselves "old" yet -- and neither does the dictionary, which says an "old person" is more advanced in years than an "aged person" or an "elderly person."

And I doubt many fifty-something people consider themselves elderly or aged, either.

But we can all agree that we are older than everyone younger than we are.

Synonyms
1. Old, aged, elderly all mean well along in years. An old person has lived long, nearly to the end of the usual period of life. An aged person is very far advanced in years, and is usually afflicted with the infirmities of age. An elderly person is somewhat old, but usually has the mellowness, satisfactions, and joys of age ahead. 9. olden, early.

I look much younger than I feel. And sometimes I get dismissed as 'young chick' as a result - which leads to advice my . .

20 year old niece gave me this weekend where pointed out to me that I was too old for my juicy sweatpants. She has a point. Time to grow up and start acting my age!

But - I'm a black woman - we tend to age better - and as a result of where I grew up - mostly white town in a bi-racial family and now married to a white man -

I have a REALLY thick skin. We are NOT allowed to show heart or hurt ever. It's the way America is and we learn to accept it at a very young age.

The oldest are in their late 60's. The birthrate is skewed higher at the beginning, so the median age is somewhere around 60. We are "old". We get all huffy and defensive about it, but them's the facts.

I always dated older men. My BFF (she's 46 this year) and I were joking that she and I should open up a retirement community for all our ex boyfriends.

Like I was thinking - Holy shit balls Cooper is 62 this year.

Then she's like - what's wrong with you? Jack IS retired (I was dating Coop when she was dating Jack) and is always trying to get me to come down to Belize.

We went through all of their ages - seriously - its just a number.

The last man I was involved with when I met my husband is turning 60 this year. And truthfully - I see these ex's on Facebook and they are all still hot.

And now Warren - you hate yourself as much as I hate myself for being a total scamp in my 20's and 30's.

And it's funny because my husband was dating 20 something twinkies when we met and my streak was 55 for four in a row and a 40 year old man and 36 year old woman still ended up together.

I guess we both oughta be ashamed of ourselves!

ETA: you opened the door! My husband stalks me at DU. I was hoping he wouldn't find this thread!

All the tut-tutting over tone is bullshit. Boomers own this mess. Perhaps we can be shamed into doing something about it before we croak.

But as we are aging out of the picture, the mess we are leaving will soon enough be the responsibility of the idiots behind us.

You think we've done a good job running the planet over the last 20 years?

And I do NOT blame young progressive voters for the other young people who didn't vote in off-year elections. But things would have gone very differently if they had.

I'm guessing a lot of simpletons believe "this mess" is unique to the Boomers, and have too much faith invested in that position to see otherwise..

when, every once in a while, I think about asking a younger person (20s, 30s) out on a date.

That's about it.

I still snow ski, scuba dive, hike, and do the things I did when I was in my 20s or 30s.

I do have a few more health issues now.

with universal traits. That way you don't have to work to hard at thinking especially critical thinking. That is why I find it so strange when I see an OP talking about old white men and such lumping them all together since this board touts itself as being more enlightened than others.

When I turned 65 last year I instituted a new rule with my doctors, because all of them are now younger than me. They are now barred from using the "O" word. My favorite doc now refers to me as chronologically gifted. And he's right!

Of course I'm only 33 so I haven't been down that road (yet). Guess I was wrong on the definition.

OTOH I've told many of my older students who gripe about their age not everyone gets to be ____ (whatever age they are).

and we supported JFK and RFK. We marched against the bomb and the Vietnam War, and when we said that this war was a damn, dumb idea, a lot of the younger folks did not listen. A lot of those under 40 or 50 joined the military and ran off to war. No draft, many of those who joined, like Bowe Bergdahl, did not see what they were getting into. Yes, some boomers supported the war but they were also abetted by the younger generations who only listened to their anger.

but why do I still see that young girl when I look in the mirror? Why do I have the same emotions as that young woman?
U have arthritis, am always in pain because I can't take most pain medication, I have torn ligaments that were never treated right because doctors took that option off the table for me - you are too old, you don't want me to operate on you now to fix that? . Yet I still mow my own lawn, cut down small trees on my property, and do all the heavy gardening, put in and take out my own air conditioners. Do my own taxes, drive others around, volunteer for charity work. talk on message boards, ha ha .
