So, I was in JM Cremps: The Boy's Adventure Store on Saturday

They just opened at the Mall of America recently, and we noticed it while walking around.

At first, I was just mildly perturbed, because my 4-yr old daughter LOVED the store, and in my mind I kept thinking "They're gonna get some flack for calling themselves a BOY'S adventure store when there are going to be plenty of girls interested in camping, fishing, tractors, trucks, BB guns, etc."

But whatever, I figured it's just a name, a marketing tactic. I grabbed a couple small items we could enjoy together in the backyard, and a catalog as well.

Now that I've had a chance to sit down and peruse the catalog, I'm left with an uneasy feeling about this place. I'm getting an MRA/conservative Christian vibe I can't shake. Nothing blatant, but a few things stand out here and there. Occassional references to letting "boys be boys" so that they can grow up to be the men "God intended them to be", and that this isn't a catalog but rather a "guidebook to becoming a man."

Oh, and it also sells the book "Boys Should Be Boys" by Dr. Meg Meeker, which uses this line in the description: "Today our sons face an increasingly hostile world that doesn't value the high-spirited, magical nature of boys."

Has anyone else heard of this company before, or seen there catalog? I just wanted some more background on this company before spending more money there in the future. Thanks!

Nope, but sounds like a store I'd gladly avoid.... n/t hlthe2b Jun 2014 #1

And really, in this day and age, aren't most people well past the idea that the outdoors is just for people with a y-chromosome?

Visited their web site and it's laid out there pretty plainly.

JM Cremp, it turns out is a made up dude who apparently thinks that what is wrong with boys today is that they don't spend enough time running around out in the woods, starting campfires, swatting skeeters and killing bars.

"We believe JM Cremp is someone most of us can relate with and we hope that you will feel comfortable welcoming him into your family. He is an explorer and an adventurer. He has been around the world experiencing great adventures. He’s also grown up in America as an adventurous boy. He has not lived a perfect life, but he has learned from his mistakes and failures. Through it all he has learned the importance of faith and his Christian roots are woven into his stories.

He has a strong love for his country and believes in defending our freedom. JM Cremp raised five sons of his own and has been married to his wife and best friend for many years. We aren’t quite sure of his age, but he isn’t all that young and isn’t all that old. His name is Jebediah Manchester Cremp….we just abbreviate it JM, and sometimes refer to him as Jeb."
