In the Infantry I was an expert marksman.

I could shoot both a 45 and an M16 like no other...still have the badges to prove it. That was in the mid 1970s.

So I go to a gun range a couple of weeks back and shot pistols and an AR15.

Guess what....I couldn't hit the side of a fricking barn.

I was pretty stunned at how bad I was.

It ain't like riding a bike that's for sure.

I think the point is... if you have a license to carry a concealed weapon, you better know how to use it or you might get yourself killed....or...kill innocent people.

My buddies on either side of me on the range were awarded sharpshooter badges. Heck, one scored 42 out of 40 points, a feat that's a even Annie Oakley would brag about.

2. I too was an expert with an M16. Have no badges, have no guns, have no desire for either . . .

Deathly afraid, if I had a gun I'd use it, and there's little possibility the result would be good.

When you get put into a live fire situation it's a whole other situation. I've gotten into some lovely debates over on discussionist about these situations.

and regular has people say "I can shoot a tin can at xxx pace - I AM a marksman and I would take out those shooters" - he always replies - you know police officers are trained and train regularly to shoot in the heat of the moment, when stress is high and even then they miss more times than not. Often these nit-wits will say well I can shoot and I know how - he just says well good luck, hope you never have to find out how bad you are when in need.

There are just too many people who think they know it all and that shooting at a person when all hell is breaking lose is the same as shooting some tin can on a fence - and these people are dangerous to themselves and those around them.

for his police department. His son was an expert marksman while in the infantry. I am glad neither of them had to fire a shot while on duty or in battle.

(and I have mine). Heard on the rifle range: "Scorers help out your buddies!".When I was scoring I remember watching several rounds heading down range directly toward the target that mysteriously swerved around the target at the last minute so I scored them as hits. I assume the guy marking me down was every bit as fair. I think of this every time the media points out that a shooter had military training and won shooting medals...
