Sen. Warren applauds Obama's executive order on student loans, says he needs more help from Congress

Obama has endorsed Warren's new student loan refinancing bill:

Obama Endorses Sen. Warren’s Student Loan Refinancing Bill
By Asma Khalid June 9, 2014

BOSTON — Massachusetts U.S. Sen. Elizabeth Warren on Monday applauded President Barack Obama for signing an executive order that will alleviate the burden of soaring college debt for millions of Americans.

“He is taking the steps he can take through executive action,” Warren said.

But the Massachusetts Democrat also insisted more reform is needed.

“He’s doing good things on loan servicing, but those are all first steps,” she said. “We still have to deal with over $1.2 trillion in outstanding student loan debt. Have to deal with the high interest rates. The president can’t do that alone. That’s going to require action by Congress.”

I think only the federally secured loans can be charged lower rates. Many students get private financing. Also once a new President comes in do they change the rules back to original in January 2017 (God forbid a Republican is President)?

Good step forward, yet as they both know, not much more can be done without congress.

Now is the time for Congress to act.

This kind of legislation is extremely popular.

We need to make sure there's a vote on it.

Because then the Republicans, in order to oppose his wishes, would have to actually help him.

And that's how you play 11th dimensional chess.

I like the DUer's suggestion that someone should send this out: "republicans block Democrats bill to reduce interest rates on college loans (and I would add, 'just like republicans blocked Jobs and Infrastructure repair')" to every cell phone in America, once a week until November 2014.
