A 34-year-old Grosse Pointe Park man is undergoing surgery today after claiming he was severely beaten Saturday on Detroits east side, moments after exiting his vehicle at the scene of a crash, according to police.
Nate Szczerbinski told police hed been driving the wrong direction on one-way Vernor Highway and, as he went to turn around, a burgundy van hit him nearly head-on. He got out to check on everyone.
They were like, Did you see what the (expletive) you did? Szczerbinski said. And then they proceeded to hit me. All three of them were just hitting me and kicking me, spitting on me and calling me white (expletive).

They were just saying I was lucky that they didnt kill me, even though after that they kept saying how they wanted to kill me, he said, adding that he didnt fight back. I figured it was best just to take it. There was three of them.

What else can you say that means a fucking thing in this world beyond "sad"?

(22,308 posts)Maybe a little critical thinking would be appropriate here.
"hed been driving the wrong direction on one-way Vernor Highway and, as he went to turn around, a burgundy van hit him nearly head-on."
So the van was driving legally. Did not turn (by his own account) and when he turned, while going the wrong way, the van hit him. Not that he hit the van, oh no. The van hit him (poor baby).
He should have pulled over and allowed the van to pass. Vernor is not a highway. It is just a cross street. There are side streets crossing it every two houses. He could have easily moved out of the way and then turned onto a side street.
Instead he turned in the street and caused a "nearly head-on" collision.
I see no reason to believe the rest of his story, given the clear misrepresentation of the event. Odds are he starting bitching about his Grosse Pointe Park vehicle being hit by a Detroit van. The odds of him not provoking the attack are greater than those in powerball.
He also admits to having had a beer, but says it was only one. I'm sure that just one beer would not cause someone to drive the wrong way on a one way street, then swerve into a vehicle that was headed toward you. Much less get out and mouth off about the accident. So we will just dismiss that.

You will see that the guy got about two blocks before getting into the accident. Sure, one beer. He was also headed away from Grosse Pointe. Vernor heads toward the suburbs and since he was going the wrong way he was headed toward downtown. Also, Kercheval is a two way street, so he really had no reason to be on Vernor to begin with.
I hope to hear the other side of the story. This story is completely one sided.
I'm sorry he got hurt, but I think he is full of shit.

(5,169 posts)OK, he was apparently driving like a jackass. He should have driven more carefully. Maybe he only had one beer - we'll see.
Perhaps he came out dropping N bombs, maybe he came out truly sorry.
Even if he was being an obnoxious racist jackass, did the suspects have the right to do that kind of beatdown on the man?
I neither know nor particularly care how much he had to drink or how badly he drove. Maybe he should lose his license, maybe he was driving drunk, maybe he said something offensive (pure speculation)... none of which justifies the beating the guy evidently took.
The only "other side" that could possibly excuse it would be if he'd initiated a fight and simply lost badly. Suppose the same thing had happened to a Detroiter on the other side of the city limit - would any of the details mentioned have justified suburbanites dishing out a beating?
Edited to add: I'm pretty much ignoring his claims of racial epithets. There's no way to prove who said what to whom when, and given his driving I wouldn't put much stock in his detailed recall of what was said. But his face clearly shows he took a beating that is pretty hard to justify.
