Question about Canadian / US dual citizenship

A couple that I know recently traveled to Canada for the birth of their second child, they did the same for the birth of their first child. Neither of them are Canadian citizens. I assume that by being born in Canada to parents who are US citizens the children will have dual citizenship.

Can anyone shed light on why people would want to do this? I'd think that the authorities would have a pretty dim view of this wouldn't they?

I hadn't considered the cost angle, but I'm not sure that's what's behind their reasoning.

The problem is not "us", at least in the sense of "all of us." It's him, and his pathetic band of followers and their ilk. I have no problem with them eating their own.

and that a baby born in Canada to parents visiting the country does, in fact, get Canadian citizenship.

From wiki:

Canada's citizenship law has, since 1947, generally conferred Canadian citizenship at birth to anyone born in Canada, regardless of the citizenship or immigration status of the parents. The only exception is for children born in Canada to representatives of foreign governments or international organizations. The Canadian government has considered limiting jus soli citizenship,[18] and as of 2012 continues to debate the issue[19] but has not yet changed this part of Canadian law.

Some expectant Chinese parents who have already had one child travel to Canada in order to give birth in order to circumvent China's one-child policy,[20] additionally acquiring Canadian citizenship for the child and applying for a passport before returning to China.

An article about potential changes coming to the system here:

What I found indicated that being born in Canada automatically confers Canadian citizenship UNLESS one parent is a representative of a foreign government (Diplomat).

I hadn't known about Chinese couples traveling to Canada to circumvent China's birth limitations. I'm still trying to wrap my head around the advantages of doing this for US citizens who have good paying jobs with health insurance.

Such a putz--I wish you'd take him, and I wish we could slam the door on him!
