Yes we know this to be true... but to have the BBC state this in the bottom of the hour news summary drove the point home. It wasn't a political statement, just a statement of fact.
It makes me think that the US mainstream news media won't go there... and go to state this truth.
In my mind, what those anti-government, anti law-enforcement murderers did in Las Vegas is change the symbolism of the "Don't Tread on Me" flag from a flag for the Tea Party to something to be associated with the likes of the Nazi flag. Then for the BBC to state it's a flag used by "extreme right wing groups" .... it just blew my mind.
Why does this truth get spread outside the US like this but not here? Doesn't America deserve straight news?
Thank you for listening.

They are ideological conservatives (as compared to monetary conservatives who are conservative about money matters)....ideological conservatives don't like change.....the revolution was all about change.....they would have been Tories. Not a doubt in my mind, in fact, it would have been impossible for them to be Patriots.

(12,151 posts)In the present context, it's not "A flag associated with the Revolutionary War." It's a Tea Party / Sovereign Citizen symbol.
And it's not a coincidental reference. Rightwingers in America are and have been winding themselves up under the notion that they and their guns are the only true Americans, and that they have some kind of duty to "put things right," and that everyone will join them when what they see as the inevitable violent, racially tinged New Civil War begins.
Now they're threatening federal agents and embarking on suicidal cop-killing missions, overtly invoking the same ideology, but we're apparently not going to talk about that. We're just going to accept that everyone gets a gun, and everyone gets to engage in irrational conspiracy theories about the government, and hey, a few people are going to take it a step further and murder some people.

(426 posts)is afraid of backlash, pure and simple. Facts be damned. Fair and balanced? We know that's bullshit. CNN is too worried about walking the line between MSNBC and FOX. And this is one truth that even MSNBC is probably afraid to state outright on the air. Our news media has become as polarized as our politics.

(25,111 posts)and fake news, cnn and other corporate media is fueling this. Of course they won't 24/7 cover this like what they are doing with an five year captive American soldier by tearing him and his family down so GOPers can look good for 2014 elections at the same time trying to destroy Pres O's presidency - "I" word.
Corporate media, hate radio and it seems like majority of the GOP party and its base are slowly going into "revolution". Patriots - nada, no way, GOPers are the enemy of the state.

(32,723 posts)There was a time not so very long ago when the American Right and Republicans were peddling their philosophy all over the world as the wave of the future and the world actually considered their ideas for a while.
Now the world is wondering how in the hell we allow it to exist. Most civilized nations would have cracked down on these people long before they got to this point in the name of keeping the peace.

(3,557 posts)Basically it pointed out that typically 6 years into every two-term president's presidency that typically the party opposite of the president's party is seen more favorably. Simply put, the public gets fatigued by the party in power.
However, recent polls suggest that this isn't happening 6 years into Obama's presidency. The democrats, in terms of favorability, are much better off now than any incumbent party has been at this point in a presidency.
Things are really shaping up to turn hard left progressive in this country in the very near future.

(32,723 posts)They love the idea that it's a 50/50 country and always has been.
It NEVER has been. That has always been a Right Wing talking point.
This is a very Liberal country and always has been but half the country doesn't vote so elections are decided by 25% of the population.

Franklin gave away his patentable ideas in a very socialistic way. Gadsen was a supporter of working men and their rights, before the union movement really got started.
If the Teas knew more about this history they wouldn't be so ready to embrace it.

(10,299 posts)Before the Nazis used it, it meant something entirely different. In some parts of the world the swastika is a sign of peace, especially so in Hinduism and Buddhism.
The anti-governmentalists in the Las Vegas shooting made that crystal clear the moment they used both symbols together.

The Millers appear to have been motivated by extreme far-right views. The couple left a flag at the scene of the crime with the words "Don't Tread on Me," a Revolutionary War symbol used by some anti-government extremists.

The US corporatemedia "news" is owned by those who only care about themselves and others like them.. they have no interest in the Democratic position. I haven't watched since Nov 2002.
