Baby Rhino Is Glued to Keeper After Seeing Poachers Kill Mother

https://s2.yimg.com/bt/api/res/1.2/zF3n5qkPW7mn59fD9PAo_A--/YXBwaWQ9eW5ld3M7Zmk9aW5zZXQ7aD0yODg7cT03NTt3PTUxMg--/

An orphaned baby rhino has bonded with its keeper after seeing South African poachers mutilate his mother for her horn.

The animal was brought to the Hoedspruit Endangered Species Center in South Africa and affectionately named Gretjie by the staff.

The poachers slaughtered his mother at the Kapama Private Game Reserve in South Africa on the night of May 7, according to the center.

Maybe they should use a chainsaw on the people doing this as well dare I suggest?

and cut out the stumps of the tusks. So that did not do any good at all, did it? Just made him easier to kill.

If they could find a permanent dye that would turn ivory a really hideous color forever that might save the elephant. Don't know what would save the rhino.

Myths are started with storytelling. Can't we destroy them the same way?

The stupidity of killing endangered species to try to somehow absorb their power is one of the saddest failures of OUR species.

But sure, China's apparently the big player in the Magical Animal Murder Potions market.

Edit: Jesus, nevermind. Apparently the Russians take the bile FOR Asia.

So, yes, It's Asia. So we need our counter-memes translated into Chinese, Vietnamese, Korean, Japanese and Laotian, apparently.

Yuck.

There are poor people everywhere.

I watched a great show that had a news article about the Rhinos. It was on HBO's news show 'VICE'. They showed why there will always be a high demand for Rhino horn even though it s made with the same stuff that makes up our fingernails & toenails.

What was interesting was one scientist who weighed in with his solution for the poaching - get rid of the horn. The Rhinos really don't use the horn for much of anything and it could easily be clipped (like a toenail). Not sure if all of the facts were accurate but might be a good solution to consider.

Killing animals for financial gain and for sport aren't any different, so I hope the people on DU fantasizing about doing all sorts of mean things to these poachers feel the same way about your buddies who hunt on a regular...

An uncomfortable truth is a that a lot of poachers come from appallingly impoverished regions, in many of which the humans probably receive less Western attention than the endangered animals.

"killing a rhino and eating it directly" helps one live, while "killing a rhino, selling it, using that to buy food and eating the food" helps one live while fulfilling somebody else's immoral desires to own a rhino horn.

Sorry, there's no equating subsistence hunting and trophy hunting. Period.
