General Discussion
Related: Editorials & Other Articles, Issue Forums, Alliance Forums, Region ForumsAbout Eric Cantor. Are my reading comprehension skills lacking in this passage,
or is the writer not making any sense?
It sounds to me as if Cantor will be replaced by someone even worse -- who will run unopposed in the general. But this writer says this clinches the win for Cantor.
On edit: A different reporter -- this one from the WA Post -- also made my head spin (below). But he, at least, noted that Cantor's replacement will have an opponent in the General election.

House Majority Leader Eric Cantor (R-Va.) was shockingly defeated in the Republican primary to represent Virginia's 7th District, the Associated Press reports.
Cantor faced what was considered a long-shot challenge from Dave Brat, a tea party-backed professor who has been a vocal critic of the House's number two Republican and highest-ranking Jewish member.

Democrats did not field a candidate in the 7th District, so with Tuesday's win Cantor has clinched an eighth term in Congress.

In a stunning upset propelled by tea party activists, House Majority Leader Eric Cantor (R-Va.) was defeated in Tuesdays congressional primary, with insurgent David Brat delivering an unpredicted and devastating loss to the second most powerful Republican in the House who has widely been touted as a future speaker.
The race called shortly after 8 p.m. Eastern by the Associated Press.

The question in this race is how large Cantors margin of victory will be. If he wins by more than 20 points, it will likely quell rumblings about his popularity back home. If Brat falls within 10 points of the seven-term congressman, it could stoke them.
The winner of the GOP primary will face Democratic Party nominee Jack Trammell a professor at Randolph-Macon College, the same school where Brat works in the general election this fall.

(13,869 posts)edit: Oh, that last sentence was from HuffPo, not you. They must've written that before the results were in, assuming Cantor would win. Shoddy editing/proofreading on their part.

(9,350 posts)News reports are saying this is a very Conservative district. However, the turnout was low. Maybe some moderate Republicans will decide to vote for a Democrat just to push back against the Tea Party. The Democrats are going to have to work hard with voter turnout. It would be great if the Democrats could win this seat.
