Utah man arrested for chaining 6-year old son to the bed frame

LOGAN, Utah (AP) — Authorities filed child abuse charges against a Utah man Tuesday after finding his 6-year-old son chained to a metal bed frame while the man was at work.

Police in Logan, a city about 80 miles north of Salt Lake City, went to the home around 11 a.m. Tuesday after receiving an anonymous tip about the abuse. They found the boy home alone with a chain attached to a metal bedframe padlocked to his ankle.

Logan City Police Chief Gary Jensen told The Associated Press that the boy had access to snacks and water and the chain was "just long enough" that the boy could reach the restroom.

The 28-year-old father was booked into Cache County Jail on four counts of child abuse, Jensen said. The AP is not naming the man to avoid identifying the child.

It doesn't say anything about any physical harm. People are in such horrible financial situations lately. I know a few people who can't afford babysitters and leave kids younger than I'd be comfortable with home alone. There aren't a lot of choices. We need to support people trying to get out of poverty, find some childcare solutions or something.

I do agree that this is wrong and shouldn't happen, but I guess I have empathy for a parent who thinks, "I have to work so we can keep our home. I can't afford to keep our home if I pay for childcare. I can't bring my child to work. I have to keep my child from going outside where he might be harmed. What can I do?"

If I hear that he was beaten or otherwise injured, I will change my tune, but I do wonder about what's going on and if this is an issue of poverty rather than "A Child Called It."

I think you are correct.

My grandmother chaind my then 3-year old father to a tree while she was working in the garden back in the 1930s. That garden is what fed the family during The Depression. She could not waste time tracking him down when he ran off.
