So I'm on the treadmill at the gym tonight

and from where I am I have pretty good views of the TVs that have CBS, NBC, ABC and Fox on.

I was watching CBS but then I notice a picture of the Koch boys on the Fox tv so I decided to see what was being said. It appears that the Kochs have given a sizable donation to the United Negro College Fund and "some say" they should return it. My post is not about that.

Now, all the TVs at the gym have closed captioning and I realize that computers are probably doing the captions but wouldn't you think that scripted remarks would be fed in for captioning in advance? So, shortly after the anchor says "United Negro College Fund", in the captioning box appear the words "United Knee Grow..."

I nearly stopped in my tracks - but then I would have flipped off the back of the treadmill.

This is especially true if the program is British. The result is often hilarious.

It makes documentaries really fun- all that obscure vocabulary and accents complicate the situation. A captioning program likely wouldn't have negro in it's vocabulary because it would be offensive if it substituted it for a similar word, and aside from period pieces about race and mentions of the UNCF, when does it appear? Well, at least now that Cliven Bundy is out of the news...
