Whatever it used to stand for, it's clear that the extreme right-wing teabaggers in this country have adopted this as their symbol. To me, this flag is now almost as offensive as the Confederate flag.

(14,449 posts)Why spit on that flag. It has a very important history and making it derogatory make the Right Wing win....it is NOT their flag.

Sadly, though, I immediately wonder if someone wearing a cross or displaying a US flag is a RWer though. That is sad...

I have a friend who used to fly the Gadsden flag with his Marine's flag, but because of the Tea Party, he removed the it from the flagpole in his front yard.

(2,795 posts)Whenever I see it flying at someone's house, I know a tea bagger lives there. Frankly I dislike that flag. Historical or not, the whole rattle snake with the "don't tread on me" threat screams too much of that rube-ish "boot in your ass because it's the American way" attitude.

(8,962 posts)The fact that Teabaggers have adopted this flag dating back to the American Revolution does not equate with the Confederate flag at all, which has been a long standing symbol of hatred and divisiveness. The baggers see themselves as American patriots, when in fact they are modern-day Tories, supporting policies that empower oligarchies and corporate interests over average citizens. The fact that conservatives in England have retained the Tory label is telling. During the American revolution, those who swore allegiance to the crown were also conservatives, intent on maintaining the status quo. Yes, these people are off by a full 180 degrees, and the three cornered hats and misappropriated use of historic banners do not offer them any redemption, merely delusion.

(41,818 posts)I like the design of the flag, and it has historic presidence that will LIVE BEYOND THE TEA BAGGERS. My thought always was, if they wanted to be original they should have designed their own flag... rather than steal a historic flag.

(15,064 posts)American general and statesman Christopher Gadsden, who designed it in 1775, made it a symbol of the American revolution. It's a museum piece. I also see it as idiots using an outhouse and calling it a modern toilet facility. Apparently less than intelligent people also don't realize muskets and powder horns are a relic of a different time.

(9,808 posts)We're casually house hunting. (We want a garage, but we can't move until Ancient Kitty goes in search of the celestial catnip. She's 23, so it'll happen eventually, but until then, we'll wait and pick the right neighborhood for us.)
When I see a Gadsden or a Confederate flag, or Beauprez yard signs (in June) or cars with "For America"* on their back windows, or NRA stickers, I know we won't fit in and I'll spend too much of my time fuming. Not to mention the fact that I lost a cousin a few years ago when his neighbor decided to test a handgun and fired it long instead of into the ground. The bullet went through the wall of my cousin's house and killed him.
Our neighborhoods are pretty dense for suburbia, and I like that. I don't mind living near responsible gun owners, but I have no way of knowing which ones are which. It's a little safer to assume that someone who advertises their affiliations will be vocal about it, which will be irritating to me at minimum, and might end up with a shooting on the block (kid sneaks out, kid sneaks in. These things happen too often.)
So when I see those signs, I move on. It's a quick shorthand. I'm going to live in that neighborhood for the rest of my life -- I don't want to set myself up for being disgruntled.
* the Romney campaign sent out rear window decals that said Romney for America. After he lost, I've noticed that a lot of the Romney part got razor-bladed off, but the For America part stayed.
