Superintendent George Price says smoking will be prohibited at all six of the parks guarded beaches beginning June 19.
Price tell the Cape Cod Times that secondhand cigarette smoke ruins the experience of non-smokers at the beach. Millions of people visit the national park every year. He says the ban is a result of a number of complaints from visitors.
The smoking ban covers Coast Guard Beach and Nauset Light Beach in Eastham, Marconi Beach in Wellfleet, Head of the Meadow Beach in Truro, and Race Point Beach and Herring Cove Beach in Provincetown.

Excellent. I don't go to the beach to be exposed to the smell of cigarette smoke (which always seems to blow in my direction). Even if secondhand smoke was perfectly safe, it just smells disgusting. I don't think cigarettes should be banned, but smoking should be restricted such that nonsmokers are never exposed to secondhand smoke.

(14,449 posts)I wonder if these bans are going to eventually include pot? I think that people should be allowed to smoke anywhere except inside. I don't smoke but they are really treating people like leapers the last few years.

(25,406 posts)but it should be illegal to involuntarily expose anyone to secondhand pot smoke. People's right to smoke tobacco or pot does not trump my right to walk down the street without inhaling the byproducts of the guy smoking ahead of me.

(22,457 posts)It was in response to the op writing they are not concerned about second hand smoke, but smell. We cannot expect to be protected from every unpleasantry in life.

(6,073 posts)I think the bigger concern is the rude people who discard their cigarette butts in the sand.

(68 posts)allowed to throw on the beach is cigarette butts , why do smokers think that's okay but the drink cup or the sandwich bag they have they will walk and place in the garbage?
Nye Bevan
(25,406 posts)And what's with throwing cigarette butts out of car windows? What do they assume is going to happen to them? Selfish assholes.

(30,099 posts)How they disposed of the cigarette butts did, a great deal. I don't recall ever seeing a sign
suggesting they put them in a bag to dispose of when they leave the beach..like you would
your remains from taking your lunch to the beach, etc.
The Cape has some of the most beautiful beaches, lets keep them that way.
My favorite beach is in Wellfleet....Cahoon Hollow.

(546 posts)The war on smoking is approaching the level of a crusade. Ok
I have no real problem with that but when it gets to the level of a witch hunt something is wrong.
I was camping in a state park last weekend and there were numerous campfires in the vicinity, all stoked with firewood that is for sale on site. The smoke permeated the entire campground and was just as noxious to me as any other kind of second-hand smoke.
In fact, the amount of smoke generated by a single campfire is far, far larger than burning a whole carton of cigarettes.
Shall we ban campfires in public parks and beaches too? How about charcoal grills? Are they any less self-indulgent than smoking?

Narrowing the focus on cigarettes (presumably pipes and cigars as well) in the face of far more significant sources of pollution is more about being politically correct than environmentally conscious.
