Scientists condemn 'crazy, dangerous' creation of deadly airborne flu virus

Scientists have created a life-threatening virus that closely resembles the 1918 Spanish flu strain that killed an estimated 50m people in an experiment labelled as "crazy" by opponents.

US researchers said the experiments were crucial for understanding the public health risk posed by viruses currently circulating in wild birds, but critics condemned the studies as dangerous and called on funders to stop the work.

Scientists at the University of Wisconsin-Madison used a technique called reverse genetics to build the virus from fragments of wild bird flu strains. They then mutated the virus to make it airborne to spread more easily from one animal to another.

"The work they are doing is absolutely crazy. The whole thing is exceedingly dangerous," said Lord May, the former President of the Royal Society and one time chief science adviser to the UK government. "Yes, there is a danger, but it's not arising form the viruses out there in the animals, it's arising from the labs of grossly ambitious people."

And with people so immuno-compromised from poor nutrition and health habits, it would spread like wildfire. Just...no words...

Simon Wain-Hobson, a virologist at the Pasteur Institute in Paris, said he feared that governments and funding bodies would only take the risks seriously once an accident had happened. "It's madness, folly. It shows profound lack of respect for the collective decision-making process we've always shown in fighting infections. If society, the intelligent lay-person, understood what was going on, they would say "What the F are you doing?"

And when the forces that fund their work is motivated purely by the profit margins exclusively, then the corruption of the vaunted ''scientific method'' is complete.

This is how you end up with GMOs poisoning the food supply.

This is how you end up with Koch Bros. soot from tar sands polluting the air we breathe.

This is how you have a firm like Monsanto spewing chemicals anywhere and everywhere for decades and still allowed to exist. If a person had killed as many people as they have, they'd be considered the century's worst mass murderers.

This is how you end up with an NSA that monitors your every word, email and purchase.

This is how you end up with a military with weaponry that can kill children on the other side of the world from the comfort of an easy chair in bunker in Arizona. And not have to worry about going to jail.

The scientific community has enabled our enslavement through their complicity, their greed, their absence of any moral underpinnings whatsoever and by their tunnel-vision and plain stupidity.

- Yes, brilliant people can be stupid as hell. That's why things are so f$!ked up......

And then there's this.....

10. Wisconsin Elected and Re-elected Scott Walker As Governor - No Surprise They Created a Deadly Virus

I used to think that Wisconsin was a progressive state. "Recreation, Industry, Agriculture" as the state
welcome signs proclaim. An island of culture, learning and rationality.

But think of it - Wisconsinites elected Scott Walker to the governorship. (With the open support
of the Koch Brothers).

Then, after Walker attacked unions and public employees and gutted the educational system, he was subjected to a recall.

But - Wisconsinites elected him again. With the help of the Koch brothers (again).

Now, after witnessing such irrational behavior, why is anyone surprised that the University of Wisconsin
would go to great expense and trouble to create a hitherto non-existent, deadly, air transmissible flu virus?

Could the esteemed scientists who have created this Frankenstein monster please explain in layman's terms
exactly HOW the study of this virus is going to improve public health? Isn't the example of the Spanish flu enough?

Will you be testing it on student volunteers? Or maybe a blind test with a secret release in the Student Union?

What are you thinking?

Should I stop buying Wisconsin cheddar cheese before it's too late?
